305 build up

ok...against everything that people are telling me.i'm going all out with my 305.why?becuase noone does it.aparently thats not a reason to do it...lol.ok.everything is coming out and the block is being rebuilt.it's getting +5.50cc flat top pistons.67cc heads.i'm gunna stick with my street dominator manifold for now.a 492/492 advertised duration is 284/284 roller tapt hydrolic cam.i'm keeping my 2.5 headers that connect to a 3 inch system.only thing i need help on is this.i want to deck my block for better compression.i want 11:1.i'm just wondering how far is it safe to deck a 305?i may need to change my heads to get that compression but i think the 67cc ones should do ok.

Re: 305 build up

Do a 335 CID stroker kit. It will add some good HP.

Re: 305 build up

The "absolute minimum" piston to head clearance w/ the head gasket compressed thickness, is .035. You are going to limited in valve size with the 305 due to the bore diameter. So looking for another head option really does not make as much since as merely reducing the volume of the combustion chamber in the head that you have now.
Find a block! What you are attempting to do is a noble cause but for the money spent, you can achieve much more performance with a .030 over 350.

Re: 305 build up

thanks for the advice.i think that the 335 stroker thing is what i was gunna end up doing.or sortta.i was gunna put a 350 stroker crank in it.but the crank size in the 305 and 350 are the same...according to what i've read at least.so wouldn't it still be a 305.and the bore will be slightly bigger, you can't really find performance 305 parts.but i figure that if this endever proves fruitless then i can transfer the majority of the parts over to a 350 and get more hp and tq.so it's a stepingstone.thank you for the advisce once again.

Noooooooooo!! DO NOT DO A 335 STROKER!!! There's a reason why you hardly ever hear of people making fast 305's. Its because they're not worth it. The bore size of the cylinders is too small to support horsepower, there is a very limited selection of heads for 305s, and when youre done spending money, you've spent as much or more for a comparable 350 or larger.

Re: 305 build up

I built a gnarly little 305, probably 305 HP at the crank. Certainly 262 RWHP at the wheels. It had a lumpy cam, and not a whole lot of torque below 2800 RPM. When it came onto the pipe it was terrific fun.

...however not NEARLY as much fun as the 385 stroker that replaced it

As kevin said, it's going to cost you a significant amount of cash, and it's really worth opening up the bore by moving straight into a 4.00 inch bore.

However if you are dear set on building your 305, perhaps you should consider backing off on the compression ratio, then consider going to forced induction like supercharging or turbocharging. 11:1 is awfully high unless you are running race gas, especially if you stick with iron heads.

Re: 305 build up

well i think i may be aborting this endevor before i even get to it...responses are the same as what i've gotten from friends.but better explained and without the "you drive a girl car"lol.so it's back to the other idea.350 block 4.125 pistons and a 4.00 crank.hello 427ci small block.thanks for the help.still gunna be high compresion though.

Re: 305 build up

You are not going to put a 4.125 piston in a 350 block, You will need a 400 block. One way or the other, throw the 305 away.

Re: 305 build up

i can get a motown 350 block that comes with a 4.125 bore standard and can safely be overbored to 4.200.

LOL that is all that I have gotten too with my 305...is throw it away and put in something else, like a 350 or larger.....but I still havent decided what to do...it is a daily driver so I will do what I can with the 305 for now...

There you go! Cam it, port the heads, put a good intake on if you want, do whatever you want, but think twice if you have to pull the pistons out of the bore.

you know what. listen to these guys, i rebuilt a 305 for my 82 camaro and it was probably the biggest mistake i have done besides getting married. i put in a bigger cam with 350 heads on it and put on all the good stuff like headers and performance manifold and carb. but when it came down to it it just didnt have the power i was told to expect. now after $3000 and a bunch of headaches, it would have been cheaper to go with a 350. i guess i just wanted to be different, and that can sometimes not be good.

We saved another one!!! More cubes = more fun.

What's the car going to be used for?
What's your budget?

A reman. 350 can be fun and a Nelson/Bischoff/Shaffiroff Racing crate engine can also be fun. Depends on how big you want your smile to be.

Although I wouldn't build a 305, the small bores aren't that big of a problem when trying to make power. Run a more radical cam to pour air into the cylinder and it compensates. just remember that when you run a huge cam, your vacuum won't be very good for any accesories.
