3 inch exhausr. Mistake? Help please.
3 inch exhausr. Mistake? Help please.
I have a 383 with an eagle rotating assembly, 6" rods, JE forged alum. pistoms, lost the card crane cam, roller rockers, MSD 6AL, AIR-GAP RPM intake and a street avenger 770. CR about 9:1. Here is the problem. I bought 1 5/8 long tube headers, 3 inch collecters and 2 three inch I/O turbo thrush mufflers. I was planning on connecting it with 3" pipes.
I was recently told, by someone I respect, that this much volume will kill the bottom end. Is this correct? If so, what can I do about it? I have every thing in my garage except the 3" tubes. I can send back the mufflers and reducer, or lack of the reducer as I haven't opened the mufflers. I believe the Hookers are the correct size.
Thanks,
Steve "buy now ask later" King

Theres always somebody that comes along wanting to throw a monkey wrench in your operation
Just do what u were going to do and let us know how satisfied you really are when its done

The reason that friend of yours told you that you'd lose some down low is because of the backpressure. I think the best way to go on a 383 would be duals. While 2.5" duals would probably be fine, 3" duals will not hurt you.
You don't want, nor need back pressure, unless you want to gain back those 3 lbs/ft that you could have lost, and lose the 3 hp you gained. There's a reason the top fuel cars, funny cars, and the likes run open headers. More power.
Stick with the duals.

true true. I see at least 1 ricer every day where i wonder why the hell they did the things to the car that they did. For instance a civic with spoiler, exhaust, tail lights, AND MUD FLAPS ON ALL FOUR TIRES. i think im going to go get mud flaps for my car
onefastgta. Point well taken. The ricers alway know best.
Ricers run 3" exhaust on 4 bangers, so what business do v-8's have running anything smaller than 3"?
I'm sure if there is a problem with the 3 inchers I can put a VTEC sticker and will be better than other.
I have nothing against rice. I am sure they make fun of American Iron as much as we do (intellegent) people make fun of rice. Gotta' have fun somewhere.
What I really want to do is beat the smack back into a 5.slow with a vortech. Said his car would run X in a 1/4 and had X hp. I asked if he had slips. "Nope, but . . ." He's a good kid. Nothing but fun for/from me. I will go up to a 125 shot if that's what it takes. He will go down. All in fun and ONLY at a strip.
