Post 230 CC Dart Iron heads on a 358 sbc.

Hey guys. I have a set of Performer RPM heads on my .040 over 350 with about 10.3:1 CR. I also have a Crane Fireball hydraulic flat tappet cam, 224/234 duration at .050, .496/.520 lift and 114 lsa. I have a Comp Solid Roller XE280 cam, 242/248 duration, .576 lift and 110 lsa. Over my current combo, this cam is a roller step up and its solid. But I was thinking about upgrading my cylinder heads to Dart Iron 230cc ones, but am afraid they might be a bit too big for the 358. What do you guys think the motor would react like with these heads and the comp cam. Reason why I want 230 ccs is 'cause I am going to build a 406 short block by spring and want to use those heads on it. What do you guys think, go 215 cc runners maybe? I think Performer RPM is 170cc, not sure. Thanks guys!

Sounds sweet to me! Let us know how it turns out man. Sounds like a serius bracket engine to me. I just hope your bottom end pieces are ready for 7000 RPM later man

I think that the Dart 230 cc heads start to shine at 4500 rpm and above, and really need more than .600 lift to use the bigger flow numbers. I just ordered the 230 CC heads to replace my 215 CC's because I swapped cams-one that has 670 lift etc-there was a 85 HP difference between the 215 & 230's. No other changes.

You're going to need a pretty big cam. Probably going to want a built motor too since you're going to be reving really high. And make sure your tranny is up to it! You will need a very good tranny cooler . Might want to consider drilling a hole in your tranny so you can put a little 1/8" heat sensor in there and see what kind of temps your tranny is at so that you can keep it in good shape .

At the very least have the block and rotating assembly balanced by a respectable shop. I'm sure you're probably already running forged pistons. I dunno man, if I were you I'd go for some AFR's instead... they flow better at all RPMs. Just my 2 cents .

Here are the results-the only AFR heads that outflow the dart 230 cc are their 227 CC competition heads-pricey at $2k. Here are the results from Dyno 2K using actual flow numbers from each head. Engine is a solid roller 393 CI with 10 lbs. boost. Lift is .658I and .667E. Right now I have the Dart 215 CC aluminum & swapping 230 CC's.

hey there Igor. sounds like your plannin on making some power soon huh?

that big of a head on a "small" 358ci eng. would be a dog on the street. but if you know your going to make the bigger eng., then Id go ahead and get them. esp. if your willing to get a bigger cam to try to match the heads. seriously, that is a very big port. you'll also need much \bigger rear gears then 3:27's too.

what you planning on doin w/the edelbrocks? seling cheap? email me is so. chris

Well, I got a core 400, but for now I am just going to put the roller cam into my 358, and then in the winter go with a 400 buildup and pick some heads then. I'll keep it in mind though if you are still interested then.
