My friend has an '88 Firebird he might be parting with that has a 305 V8 in it. Now my friend has told me these motors are dogs with a whopping 170 horses. What motor have you yourselves swapped out in place of this one and what else other than the motor goes into a project like this one?

Seen an LT1 swap, and LS1 swaps into the 3rd gens. Also have seen built small blocks tossed in with a decent transmission just fine as well. Which also answers part of your 2nd question. Make sure your tanny can handle what you put in it. If you go LT1/LS1, don't forget you'll also need the computer and harness, etc.

The last 3rd gen I had, we just gutted the original engine, and dropped a 383 with a built T350 behind it (we weren't looking out for mileage).
