I just bought an 87' z28 TPI auto as posted above .....I've been looking on different forums and things about the car and I've seen that chevy put the "*****" cam in the automatics ( I was wondering what a good cam I could put in it performance wise?? Im also looking at headers/exhaust and an intake to put on it......I've heard the Headman LT's are good and easy to go on with enough clearance....I heard somthing about a Holley Stealth Intake?? ANY TIPS APPRECIATED!!!! THANKS!!!

 

One place you will find ALOT of thirdgen f-body help and information is over at www.thirdgen.org As for the Hooker LT's some people they work for other's they don't. with you having an auto you would have an easier time (manuals have problems alot of the time) Also for the LTs you will need a mini starter for everything to fit. I also forget. is yours a 350 of the 305? heh.. so many options for those things in the z28. All I know is that the 350 never was in a stick car. but the 305 was in both.

 

If you have a 350 it is the same cam as in the 305 TPI 5 speed. Also if you have the 350 you are getting peak torque at 2800 instead of 3200. An '87 only thing. Also the '87 seats have a pattern that is that year only.

I'll wait to hear which TPI before making any suggestions.

 

It is a 305 TPI....The eighth digit of the vin is an F....which I read means 305 cause its hard to tell otherwise.....

 

I wouldn't worry a whole lot about upgrading that 305.. I would wait and get a 350 and then get the LT's and such for that. no matter what you do you are going to be disappointed with the sbc305 block.

 

Thanks for getting my hopes up! I could purchase a 350 engine + tranny from a friend for 500 bucks.....bout 80k on the motor....but I dont really want to put that much time into the car cause I would much rather have a stick 4th gen........just looking for a little hop up i suppose

 

If your just wanting to do a little something to add around 30HP here is a FAST PAK fron TPIS. Its $226. It says its for the L98 but you can ask em if it fits all TPI's if your interested.

The 87 305 TPI Auto has the "peanut cam", but the 305 TPI manual has the 350 TPI (L98) cam atleast thats what it says in a book I have about the 3rd gens.
