1984 fan switch

Alright so I swapped my thermo for a 190 still overheated, so im just running without one and my fan doesnt turn on untill about 230 so i had to disconnect the a/c to automaticaly turn it on when it started to heat up. Looking to replace the fan switch, but im unsure how and exactly where its located. Any help? I just want to be sure before i buy the part. Below is the switch im going to buy. Want to know if its worth it.

1) Your fan doesn't turn on until 230 for a reason - that's how it's designed from factory and works fine for other cars. If it can't cool down the engine, you have a cooling system problem.
2) 190-degree thermostat will not fix anything if you have a cooling system problem.
3) Buying an overpriced 176/166-degree switch will be a complete waste of money if you are running a 190-degree thermostat. And it will kill your fan motor shortly. And again, it will not fix anything if you have a cooling system problem.
4) If you have to run your engine without a thermostat, you have a cooling system problem.

Get my hint?

Lou

P.S.: If you are stubborn and don't like hints, the fan switch is located in the passenger side head, between the last two spark plugs.

do you have an air dam? doing 1 small thing is like putting on a cold air kit and expecting 100 hp gain, aint happenin. ya gotta have the fans and the stat working in the same frame of mind.

me, i have the 176-166 switch and have had for atleast 7 yrs. you can also buy a 200-185 switch. i have had to replace one fan but it was an orig fan.

my current combo is a 170 stat, 176-166 switch and an 82-83 air dam which is a tad deeper than the one that came on my car. works so well iv had to remove dead birds from the rad area.

im going rounds with a friend that has the same issue as you and he went the 195 route with no results. the sooner you can turn those fans on the sooner you can beat the heat. when im in traffic my car "might" go up 5" and im talking VERY stopped.

Thanks BigBadLou. If your not gonna help why say anything. If your not an ignorant ***** you wouldnt be giving people lectures and instead lessons. All im doing is trying to learn. I have to check for the air dam. Was owned by old people who would fix it when something broke. Im also not looking for power. I want to keep it original but in good running condition.

I have the air dam. Looks to be all there maybe just a little on the edges are missing and its pointing straight down. Im driving w.o the thermo and with the fan on it runs about 190 - 200. Im planning on doing a radiator flush. And there is a flow of water through the radiator when it starts to warm up.

Well, I was just hinting but it looks like you already know what to do.
A flush is always a good start and will tell you a lot about the cooling system. A good flush usually fixes more than half of overheating engines.
If the flow of water through the radiator doesn't start until the engine is warming up, I would be concerned. Without the thermostat, it should flow at all times. Check for obstructions. Check the hoses.

Welcome to the club and try the search feature often. Though, you might not get many hits on this page, then also Google is your friend. But watch out, Internet is full of misinformation ... and ignorant ******. (haven't been called that before, that's a good one! )

Can anything bad come from a radiator flush? The flow was from when i had put the thermo in. I havnt gotten to check it again. The fins? Im learning as I go so yea. Is it a good idea to buy a used water pump. My friends got one pulled out from his 84 berlinetta

Found out my air dam was snapped in half. Can someone tell me the dimensions. Atleast its vertical length. im choosing to make my own with acrylic plastic that will snap off if taken a hit. Doing it just until i can get money for an actual one

I think it would be easier and cheaper cutting a peice to size and molding/joining it to the top half of whats left. Same thing in my eyes just doesnt look as clean

if you know someone at a metal shop get them to bend a piece for ya. take the left over air dam piece and have him make it that width and use it to mark the holes.
with this you can lean it forward a tad for more dig in the air. just dont pull up on the curb and it'll survive untill ya hit a late night coon or rabbit.

but i will get those measurements.
