145+ stock?

I was late to work today....the car hit 145+ (the speedo sticks shortly after the 145 mark) the only non-stock item is the 3.73 gear set. Supposedly it is a vette engine, so i was told by the car salesman. I assume he was reffering to the heads on the car, as they seem newer than the rest of the engine - and there is an intake bolt missing from the drivers side. Is it possible for a stocker to do those speeds or do i have a modified engine?

You may have a modified engine but if you want to know if its a Vette engine get the numbers off the block and reference them to find out. You could also get it dynoed and find out if its modified.

Vette engine? You probably just heard him wrong when he told you it had a jet engine.

Re: 145+ stock?

If I remember correctly, I think that 157 is the top speed for an L98 Camaro or TA. I hit 160 one night with mine after a few mods. I don't recommend it if you are anywhere near sane.

Re: 145+ stock?

if you have 3.73 and you haven't corrected the speedo it'll read way fast, if you got a vert or a 305 auto you can't got faster then 115-125mph the chip is programmed to cut off fuel, and I haven't seen a camaro yet with a speedo accurate much above 70mph

when I used to have a speed limiter in my vert I hit it almost every saturday morning on the way to work

story about salesmen and camaros,

heres the ad, 91 Z28, T-tops, corvette LT1 motor, corvette trans, 18" wheels, $6000 system (whole bunch of other stuff was listed)

so I go down to take a look at the car, notice right off it has 17" rims not 18",
start talking to the salesmen, its a brand new corvette LT1 and trans, pop the hood, its TPI, hmm, I think 91 TPI auto with T-tops, this thing is screaming 305, so I ask to see the receipts for the new motor, he doesn't have them, and the $6000 system, was a sony explode bottom of the barrel deck, a sony explode amp, with 2 alpine type S 12's

granted this was a very nice car in excellent shape, it was pretty obvious it
wasn't a corvette anything the rims were not 18's and the system was worth under $1000

Real men drive Z's with the 85mph speedo... that way we feel really cool talking about how we "totally buried the needle" on our way to work.

Re: 145+ stock?

lol Im amused how many people critisize on this website like they never speed. This was early morning with no traffic, if you think im insane enough to try those speeds without knowing what im doing, you'll believe anything. And second the engine is not a corvette engine -any idiot with two eyes can tell that. But the heads on the car have either been repaired or modified. Considering it was a previous drag car I just wondered if it was common for people to switch out heads from the corvette, and seeing how the car is computer controlled I did not understand how it could reach anywhere near those speeds. I may be 18, but i'm neither invincible nor stupid. It was a simple question with a sarcastic sentance leading the way - so anyone with USEFUL information please feel free to tell me.

Re: 145+ stock?

The Turbo Trans Am in 1989 did 153 mph. And they were big power. So 145+ I doubt could be done stock in an F-body. I'd believe 140 though.

these cars are capable of high speed easily, my car is still pulling hard when the speed limiter kicks in,
but my speedo reads way fast at high speed,

and if you have 3.73 and your speedo isn't corrected it'll read way fast

what rpm were you at?

TPI corvette and TPI camaro use different intake bolt paterns so the heads aren't swapable without changing the intake

Re: 145+ stock?

Ok thats what i was wondering, i have a missing bolt in my intake, im not sure if that is why or perhaps somone just did some head work and lost the bolt. The only possibility is then, the computer has been flashed and the speed limiter is no longer there - regardless the car would have limited speed to 120 or so on my speedometer if the limiter was set. I sat at about 5,000 rpms for a bit so its a verifiable high speed 145 give or take. The tachometer should be fairly accurate correct?

Re: 145+ stock?

I find tachs to be close for the most part, they almost all read a bit fast
your cars stock speed limiter is 255mph thats the most it can be

your ecm can't be reflashed, needs to have a chip put in

5000 rpm with 3.73 and stock tire would be about 145mph
but with torque converter slip and tachs usually reading fast, probably doing abit less

Re: 145+ stock?

If it was a drag car, it's very likely been modifide. Swapping the aluminum Corvette L98 heads is also very common.
However you do not have to mod this car to hit 145mph. The Formula's have one of the best drag coefficient of all the F-Bodies and are capable of these speeds with a stock 350.
