10 bolt, 9-bolt swap

i have an 89 IROC as you can read in the sig. my rear end (a 9-bolt) is broken and i may have access to a 10-bolt. do these bolt up directly or will some modifying be involved?

This may not be much help, but I'd repair that 9-bolt if you can. Its a lot stronger than any 3rd gen 10 bolt. And if your 9-bolt is like mine (being an '89) and you have rear disc brakes, this is the one and only year the 9-bolt was combined with the huge PBR calipers.

Overall, any 3rd or 4th gen 10-bolt regardless of year, will be inferior to your 9-bolt diff.

Having said that, if you must use a 3rd or 4th gen 10 bolt, then yes it should go right in with no problems.

Well that being the case, and if you can't afford the price of 9-bolt gears, then I guess going to a 10 bolt is your only option. The one good thing about the 10 bolt is the wide range of gears and the affordable prices. You *can* beef up the 10 bolt if you're making some good power (Ratech solid crush seeve, weld the axle tubes to the housing, rear cover girdle with preload bolts) which will help a lot.

For the parts you need, around $900 + Labor. And it may be more. Its been a year since I checked the prices with Miles who sell 9-Bolt Parts.

If you go to a 10-bolt I'd be interested in buying the brake hardware off your 9-bolt (I have the older pre-89 brakes on mine.)

Also it is a direct bolt-in...make sure you get one with disc brakes so you don't have to change the prop valve. You can probably find a 10-bolt for $300 or so, depending on what it came out of and what it has (gears/posi/brakes...)

the one i'm looking at is my friend's out of 92 Z. disc rear and 2.73 gears i believe. he doesn't know if he wants to get rid of the car yet, but it is just the body, so we'll see. rebuilding the 9bolt isn't outta the question yet either.

TheGreatJ, if i do get the10bolt, i will let you know abuot the parts you're wanting off my 9bolt. i don't know how soon i can get the new rear seeing as i just lost my job.

All the 9 bolt info and pricing is at www.9bolt.com and unfortunately, they have not gotten any cheaper. On the bright side, I am working on some used gear sets up to 4.10

92 Z??? Just the body??? Interesting.....

I'm in the market for a clean, straight body to drop my drivetrain into....I got sideswiped by an 18-wheeler (who just kept on truckin') and the $3500 of bodywork to get her straight again is just too much for me to handle. If he's lookin to sell that body and it's clean then tell him to shoot me an email with some info. Pensacola isn't that long a drive from B'ham so I can come pick it up if we work something out.
