1.6 rockers

Re: 1.6 rockers
i don't know the stock dimensions of the cams, but 1.6 rockers will bring the lift up another .03 or so...like mine is .510 of lift, then with the rockers its .543 of lift....i think the stock lift is like in the .220" region...maybe more i don't know..do a search on google or something..and yes you can use them on a 87 TPI to answer your question..

Re: 1.6 rockers
'87 TPI cam is pretty small. Its 202/207, .404"/.415" lift, and 114.5 degrees LSA. I found this info here:
http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/mods3.shtml
I dont remember whether '87's have self-aligning or non-self-aligning rockers...

Re: 1.6 rockers
Yes 1.6s will work yes 1.7s will work as well (however im not sure if the stock springs are good to the 1.7 lift) shouldnt have a problem with 1.6s tho just double check if ya get the 1.7s. Also 87 and up are the hydro roller cams in 3rd gens so yes youll need the self aligning type.

Re: 1.6 rockers
probably wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade to LT4 or LS6 valve springs while you're in there.
they can be found on ebay cheap used or new for an affordable price

Re: 1.6 rockers
Would all you agree that the 1.6 rockers are worth it. Right now i am kinda on a budget, later, maybe this winter i will consider a Cam. Sorry for bringing up winter, when it is just spring...lol...but in the time being to me it sounds like a good bang for the buck. Summit has some roller tips for $189.99. part number SUM-G6910B if you are interested.

Re: 1.6 rockers
I just got done doing some research on roller rockers and I have found that anything over a 1.6 on our motors is completely worthless. Once you reach 1.65 you start to lose power. I have read several accounts where people gained 15-20rwhp with just a rocker upgrade. You will HAVE to upgrade your springs because the factory ones are not made to handle that kind of lift. That and if you are going to be doing a cam later it would be good to do it right now and not have to do it over.
Full roller rockers are the best way to go. You will loose a ton of friction by going this route as opposed to running just roller tips. You could even run 1.5 rockers and feel a difference. The factory rockers have been known to be only a 1.4 ratio most being in the 1.42-1.45 range.

Re: 1.6 rockers
I read a few articles in either Car Craft or CHP that showed dyno number on a relatively stock 350 that once they reached the 1.6 rocker arm the did not gain any more power going to a 1.65 ratio. I will try and look up the article when I get home tonight and post my findings.

Re: 1.6 rockers
The only way i can see the 1.65+ rockers losing power is if there is not enough velocity bringing the flue/air into the combustion chamber.
I've got 1.6 full rollers on my heads that got built.I was told with them being aluminum that eventually they will wear out and i will need to replace them.Although i'm sure i wont have to worry about that in the lifetime of the engine.I had to replace my springs and check each valve seal for clearance at full lift
