The majority of people out there have absolutely no use for a V8. They will never use the extra power, don't want to pay the extra money it will cost to insure it or the added fuel costs (however, this is becoming more of a non isue as V8s continue to get better and better mpgs).
Not to mention the V6s these days are getting near 300 hp, and I wouldn't be suprosed if the Camaro offers one rated at 300 hp. Even for the majority of us, 300 hp would be plenty (of course, we always want more )
If you want GM to only offer a V8, then be prepared to pay a lot more for the car since they will not be able to spread the cost out across more units, or be prepared for a very short run on the Camaro, becasue without volume, the car will fade away once again.

Let's not forget sales targets in other countries that tax engines on displacement and (occasionally) cylinder count.
A sub 4.0 V6 is crucial for those markets.
What sells well in Alabama isn't the only thing driving this car.

I'm gonna say something that many of you are going to consider blasphemous: the base camaro should be an I4. It is not uncommon for a 200hp I4 these days, and that would have been close to the 305s in the 80's. I know most people who love of american steel hate lil' 4 bangers but you have to think about the end, not the means. For those who keep a motor stock, does it matter if it's a v-8, v-6, or I4 if they all have the same output; people want the stigma that comes w/ a v-8. Also, if we let people buy more camaros it decreases cost across all boards... helping us.
Just think about it... dya port your heads so you see higher flow bench numbers, or so you see the win light in your lane?

In my mind i understand why they want the base to be a v6 but its a Camaro....= base v8 5.3 can't or don't want a v8 than too bad its a "sports car" If they wanted the Camaro to appeal to every tom dick and harrry they would have made it a front wheel drive honda. It's a Camaro guys. come on
Yea so i know im gonna get flammed for that one...

I vote 3.9 for simplicity when working on them. DOHC, while nice on a performance side, is nothing less than a PITA when repairing. Then again, I don't give a damn because a V8 is destined for me.

V6 pony cars are made for the people who want the look of a sports car and nothing else. It's just something for them to look cool in.
Too bad that that's the way 90% of this country thinks. We need the V6 to support the Camaro, volume-wise. It sucks, but its the truth.

Having worked at a Chevrolet dealer around 69/70, I can tell you that most Camaros sold were 6 cyl. or small V-8, high performance SS350/396 were a small segment of the market, 302 Z/28 even smaller yet. I feel sure that Chevrolet will have at least one small six in the new Camaro.

No offense but if I were to get a 6 cylinder it would be something a little more practical. In Impala perhaps. Much more room and good gas mileage. Sure it may not look like or be a Camaro, but I don't see the point in looking cool in a car that has a reputation for being fast thats pretty quick, but not really fast.
That said, many many people out there do. Almost ever F-Body I see is a 6. Therefore they would be shooting themselves in the foot by not offering a 6. And with gas prices these days... I may never have bought a Camaro if I knew I'd be paying this much in just a few short years!
As for which 6 will they choose, I'd put money on OHV. Guess that means 3.9.

I'd guess they would put the 3.9 in there. I'm sure it will be around 250hp and the engine is DOD compatible. Plus I'm sure it's way cheaper to build than the 3.6L.
Doesn't the current mustang V6 sell pretty well with a Ranger V6 in it?

Regardless if you want a V6 or not, they are gonna make up the bulk of sales. A lot of women are intimidated by a V8 and want the styling of the car with out the speed. Also holds true to men that are not part of the hobby but want a "cool" car and parents who buy these cars for their kids. If these people would have bought the 4th gen, the camaro would have never went on hiatus. I hope they put the simplest, cheapest, and most dependable V6 in the camaro. I'm not gonna buy one with a sixer but I hope they do it right so the car appeals to everyone.
