Manual or Automatic Tap Shift?
It all depends on the tap shift. depends how fast it changes the gears. On my M3 it does it pretty good and quick. but for a camaro, i think i would like it in Manuel. thats what i have currently and i love it..
The SMG transmission in your BMW is VASTLY superior to the automatic that GM is going to put in the new camaro. IIRC in the M3, it is mechanically a manual transmission but that does not have a clutch... Not at all the same thing that GM is planning for the 5th gen. if I'm understanding the posts it will just be a regular automatic that will allow you change gears yourself if you put it in tapshift mode, much like a traditional 'tip tronic' auto trans.

Hey All,
I guess the disadvantage of ordering on October 13th is that you didn't get to try out the transmissions. When I ordered mine, it just seemed wrong to get an automatic for this car. Afterall, it is a sports car.
But like Jason, I changed my order to the automatic. I think that the tap shift will do what I want. It also looks like the aquisition of a drink in the cup holder will inhibit shifting!!!
I really would like to see what the launch control and no lift shift will do. But with the paddle shifters and side benefit of remote start, I'm in on the automatic this round...but I'm sure that there will be a round two when either a Z28 or convertible make the scene!!

I want the lauch control! I want to fully enjoy the car and all of it's features that makes this car closer to a luxury vehicle without having to shift all of the time. If and when I take it to the road course or find myself on a road with alot of turns and little hills, I can have the fun of reving, up and down shifting as I please.
From what I remember (and correct me if i'm wrong), but for those that had gone to Indy this past September I remember hearing that the A6 was going to be very responsive and it was going to be completely manual when in that mode. So it will not upshift unless you UPSHIFT, and it will only downshift if you DOWNSHIFT (it's the downshift I can't remember what they said though).
I have personally heard Al Oppenheiser mention more than once that the car will shift when YOU want it to shift, and not when IT wants to shift. He said if you don't tap the pad on the steering wheel, it will go up to the rev limiter.
So my other concern with the A6 would be durability. How much HP can it handle in comparison with the M6 and will you wear out the A6 prematurely if you downshift on a roll to bring the rpms up.
I know in my old 700R4 this is what killed the tranny for me. I would downshift while driving to bring the rpms to about 4000 or so when I wanted to race from a roll.

I just finished a 3 day swap with Number 3 for an A6 2SS. I can assure you that for those of you that wanted or needed the automaice transmission, you won't be dissapointed. For me, I prefer the manual. It's just what I'm comfortable with. It's where I rest my right hand. It is more natural for me.
I can assure you that the A6 DOES NOT shift until you tap the upshift button. It will hold against the rev limiter just like a manual.
The speed of the shift in the automatic is very good and it would be arguable if you could shift the manual faster if at all.
The buttons and shift quality to me are very nearly identical to the CTS-V automatic. The buttons have the same feel and location relative to your hands.
The best thing here is that either way, manual or automatic you are getting a great set-up. Both are easy driving cars. So I believe it merely comes down to your preference, manual or auto. Both 6 speeds with proven track records.
I would have to say that although you might be the closest ever to an F1 Gear box, you are a lonnggggggggg way from an F1 gearbox. An F1 transmission is basically an automatic manual. The clutch is there but it is automatically disengaged.
F1 car gearboxes are different to road car gearboxes in that they are semi-automatic and have no synchromesh. They are sequential which means they operate much like a motorcycle gearbox, with the gears being changed by a rotating barrel with selector forks around it. The lack of a synchromesh means that the engine electronics must synchronise the speed of the engine with the speed of the gearbox internals before engaging a gear.
