Horsepower peak @ 5000RPM
Horsepower peak @ 5000RPM
This is either a misprint or maybe the folks at GM are being sneaky. Yeah, it only makes 422/400hp@5000RPM (but it makes 440hp@5800RPM.)
I mean, look at the torque peak at 4500.
In the 2009 Corvette, the peaks (with standard exhaust) are 430hp@5900/424tq@4600. Preliminary specs of the G8 GXP LS3 indicate 402hp@6000/400tq@4400.
The only catch that I could see is if it uses variable valve timing, but that's not listed anywhere in the specs.
I can't wait to see the SAE ratings.

that was an example. I don't know what it really makes at 6000RPM.
The DZ302 was only rated at like 290hp despite obviously making more than that, right? Many people joke that it was rated at an RPM lower than where it's peak power really was. I'm suggesting that maybe that idea is being used here also..

Regardless if there is underrating going on, I think it is agreable that 420 horse' is pretty d@mn good. If I can't get a Z28 in a few years, I wouldn't be too sad with this power. I think they're doing a great job thus far.
The LS3 doesn't have VVT. If the motor is identical to the Vette motor then the only differences would be the chassis specific exhaust components.
I am more concerned about the L99 in the automatic and how much difference in performance there will be between it and the LS3 cars.

Well the official GM performance numbers show the automatics to be quicker in the 1/4 then their respective manual models. That is a little odd. They said they "optimized the shift points." Guess torque converter plus the gearing difference makes up for 20 less HP, more weight, and 600 less revs.
