I was just reading an article in Edmond's Inside Line about Dodge having a website where after you place an order for your car, you can track it's development. What are the chances G.M. will have something like this. I think it would be absolutely amazing if they did, maybe one up the Dodge boys, and add photos at certain stages of development.
Here's the link to the story....

Last year I ordered a Solstice, and the only way to find out where your car was, was to goto your dealer and ask "what event code" your car was at. Then you could use that code to look it up using this list below:

2030 Order Re-edited
2050 Order Changed
2000 Accepted by GM
2500 Preferenced
2550 Order Changed (thanks GO DRVN)
3000 Accepted by Production Control
3100 Available to Sequence
3300 Schedule for Production
3400 Broadcast
3800 Produced
4000 Available to Ship
4104 Bailment Invoice
4b00 Bayed (actually a capital B but it can be mistaken for an eight)
4106 Release Bailment
4150 Original Invoice
4200 Shipped
4800 Rail Ramp Unload
4300 Intermediate Delivery
4V03 EDD (Estimated Delivery Date) Updated (thanks GO DRVN)
5000 Delivered to Dealer
6000 Delivered to Customer
2000 and then 2500 are the big ones to begin the build sequence, 3000 begins the gathering of parts for the build....ask your dealer to print out a Vehicle Order Event History for you...its the most accurate as to the status of your order..If I recall..the 2000 code would reflect the order has been placed against the dealers allocation

I definately think they should do something like this. They need to keep the customer involved if they order a vehicle. I plan on ordering mine and would really enjoy being able to track the build process.
In this day and age it wouldnt be very hard to set up cameras along the assembly line and time stamp them and and link then to the vin number. store it and ship the CD with the car. I bet it wouldnt cost much and it would be almost completely automated....
Seems like it was a month and a half or so.....
I wish they would just make it so I can go onto a web site and get my event code instead of having to bother my dealer. They really get pissy with you when you call each week for an update on your car, because usually only one guy can get than info out of the system, and your sales guy is busy as well....
I had to wait 4 months for my dealer to even get an allocation for a Solstice so mine could be built....

I never order a car before can some please tell me how that process goes? Like do you put down a deposit or do you put down the same amount as you would if you were going to finance it? Where do you go to order your vehicle? Do you have to be preapproved to start the process?
