Re: Production Speculation Thread.....

and please don't tell me, it's not that simple, it can't be done.....

It can be done, if you can't figure it out fine, I could not do it on my own either. But I could find who I would need to work with to get it done.

Just because it's past your reach, and my personal reach, does not mean it could not be done.

Just because GM says it can't does not mean it can't.

I always say, if somethign costs too much, there is a better way to do it, period. 99 times out of 100, I am right. It really makes me mad that they don't see it. Modular plants that can handle a wide range of cars would be the perfect thing to shoot for, but no, lets just keep doing it the same old way, dumping a new pile of cash into an old plant to make it work with a new vehicle.....
the system getting installed in the old plant is the C-Flex system, which is capable of building multiple vehicles in one plant.

Sorry, but it seems simple to me. If they do not have the people there to figure out how it's done, then they need to hire smarter people, or let the smarter people come up with ways on how to make things better.
believe me, GM already has this all figured out, and i mean that in a good way

I know it's called the speculation thread, but these guys have not been known for lying to us in the past. And I knwo that the approval is only a formality, but we are still looking at over a year of politics that you and I have to wait through, before seeing a Camaro in the showrooms of our local dealer.

C-flex, isn't that the system they were reportedly goign to drop because it was too expensive?

Honestly, 6-8 months on a decision, on top of how long to wait til they stop losing money while investing in the trucks, then how long to re-tool the plant, to do what is needed to do what car companies are supposed to do, make cars.

GM does not need strategic pricing or the red tag event, or a new SUV to start seeing profits instead of losses, it needs to take every model as a self sustaining business case, and treat it as such, if it does not float, make something that will.

The Camaro should be out sooner. But it makes me even more upset, because it should not be the first US car out on it's platform. If it has had 1 years work into it, and is still 2-3 years away, that could very well mean if we see a concept for a competitive mid level sedan from chevy, we won't get it til 2010+.

Look how many Malibus they sell..... A lot. Think about how well they'd do with something more competitive in looks, driving feel, etc..... The wife and I looked at the Malibu, it was about 22k for what we were looking at, then we looked at the Magnum, for 21k. That is a no-brainer.

They need well designed and engineered products to sell, it can be as dependable as can be, but it also needs to be exciting. Look at a honda civic, it's dependable but not exciting. Now look at a BMW 3 series coupe, it's dependable, and exciting to drive. Get the feel of the second with the price of the first and you have a winner.

Instead of the Mustang in the design room, there should be one form all of the competition.

Re: Production Speculation Thread.....

Another thing is, they don't need to make 30 SUVs to make the most profits from them.

THey could make ten and get just as many sales, if they were better than the competition.

GM Ford and DCX have created the low volume Niche market by sitting back and letting the foreign carmakers come in and offer better products while doing nothing to improve their own for years.

Mazda can come here and sell 20,000 Miatas, at 17k (they were at one time) and make it a very profitable unit. GM can't make a profit from 70,000 units?
If the quality of Domestic cars would have improved on the level with imports, things would look different.

Now they need to not only be better in quality (which GM is) but they need to look better, and feel better.

Camaro and all other cars aside, if you could have either a
BMW 325 series coupe, cloth, manual and so on
or a
Dodge Stratus i4 auto (no manual),
both would cost you nothing, but you'd need to drive it and not sell it, which would you want?

95% of people would say the BMW, why?

Its a better car.

this is silly as one costs so much more. Compare it to a sub $30K DCX car like the Charger. Since that's what a 325 will cost you. I bet even without the hemi a lot of people would pick the charger.

Just talking about coupes here.

Sure the BMW costs more. Lets do another one then.

XK8 V8 auto coupe (70k)
vs
BMW 330 coupe (37k)

Winner still, BMW coupe. Even if people say the Jag, once they go drive it, they'd change their mind.

Re: Production Speculation Thread.....

5thgen,

you posted a good list of all the cars the Camaro has to compete with:

Hyundai Tiburon
Scion Tc
VW Beetle
Toyota Celica
Ford Mustang
Toyota Solara
Honda Civic
Mitsubishi Eclipse
Honda Accord
Acura RSX
Dodge Stratus
Monte Carlo
Pontiac G6
BMW 3 series
Pontiac GTO
Infiniti G35
Meredes CLK 350

that's a whole lot of competition there. me personally, i don't mind waiting an extra year or so to know that we will see a Camaro that could give most of that list a run for it's money in performance, price, quality, etc.

it's frustration playing the waiting game and all, but we made it this far. we all "had faith" that it would be back. even though it's just a concept, i doubt GM will ignore everything going on right now and not make this thing one of the highest priority cars in the company.
