Unhappy Pontiac G8 ST cancelled, is the Camaro next? (NO!)

Bad news on the Pontiac. GM has a lot of work to do to survive.

MOD EDIT: This is the G8 ST (the sport truck version) only. The G8, G8 GT, and G8 GXP still survive.

I'd like to know as well, that is some heavy news. Are you referring to the G8 ST being canceled?

And no, the Camaro is not likely "next". There's too much invested in it. It would conceivably cost more to stop the program than to continue.

I understand your query but man, the Camaro being cancelled talk has gotta go. Its not going to happen a month before production begins. There's far too much invested just in marketing, let alone manufacturing. The G8 was not a poster car like the Camaro is.

Right, the ST is the "El Camino" style that they were planning to bring over here from Australia. It doesn't mean that the current G8 that is here in the US and on dealer showroom floors has been canceled.

Correct, the G8 is not cancelled, the G8 ST version is the one that is cancelled, it was just announced the other day. I for one think that was a smart move on GM's part, really no place for that truck/car at all. If the SSR could not make it then the ST would definitely not.

That clears that up - Motor Trend has an article in this month's issue on the G8 GXP. It has a 415hp version of the LS3 and does 0 - 60 in something like 4.7 sec. A good preview of what the Camaro's performance will be. The GXP is more than 100lbs heavier too.

I hope that we get at least 415HP with the A6 Camaro, as is the A6 in the GXP. I know that the GXP A6 is getting the LS3 while the Camaro is getting the L99 with the A6, but even still. They better not screw over the Camaro buyers and stick with the 400HP that was advertised. The lastest rumor was that the MN6 for the Camaro was going to get 430HP instead of the 422HP when the production cars are built, so let's hope for more HP with the A6!

Yes, one new model of the G8, the ST which was the "El Camino" type truck version, has nothing to do with the rest of the G8 models. That news was on Cheers&Gears several days ago.

I just checked Motor Trend. The GXP did 0-60 in 4.5 and 13.0 sec quarter mile for both the stick and auto. The article only mentions the LS3 not the L99 so I don't believe the GXP will cylider on demand. I'm thinking (hoping) the Camaro manual should do 0-60 in 4.3 to 4.4 sec.

I was never going to buy an SSR.

I almost certainly was going to buy a G8 ST.

Shoots your hypothesis down in flames, doesn't it?

Can you tell me how GM is screwing over Camaro buyers by selloing a Camaro that is clearly and plainly advertized as having 400 horsepower???

FWIW, the horsepower rating is accurate, so I reaqlly don't know why you feel 400 horspewer equals 415... unless you are converting net hp to gross, but you'd still be way off.

You are correct in saying the GXP will be driven by an LS3 in both automatic and manual form.

Early tuning put the Camaro in the upper-mid 4s to 60. I suspect the Camaro SS manual will likely match the G8 GXP manual to 60, & be marginally quicker in the quarter. In automatic form, I suspect the GXP will be marginally quicker than the SS till aerodynamics takes over and Camaro edges ahead.

Somebody change the title of this thread! GM doesn't need any rumors going around.

the st, personally, shouldnt have even made it this far. thats a pretty unpractical car/truck. theres no way they will cancle the regular g8 or the camaro. that thing was a joke. i dont see any kind of use for a 2 seater car/truck with v8 power and rwd. didnt we learn from the el camino back in the day?

Why? You're just one person - one person wouldn't help determine whether a manufacturer keeps producing a vehicle or not. According to Wikipedia (if what is on there is correct), the last car/truck combo, the Subara Baja, sold only 30,000 over four and a half years (that's 6666.66 units per year). Assuming the same amount of buyers bought an ST each year, say 7000 (on the high side) and you add in El Camino buffs, GM fans, and people who want a RWD car/truck, you might have 10000 units sold per year. That doesn't seem to me (I could be wrong) to be a model that GM would stay with for more than a few years.
