Lightbulb It is Official - The Ford Mustang outsold the Chevrolet Camaro in 2009

It's official: The Ford Mustang outsold the Chevrolet Camaro in 2009, despite Camaro's string of month-on-month sales leads.

It was close, though. According to data released by both Ford and GM:
  1. Mustang - 66,623
  2. Camaro - 61,618
I wonder what would have happened if Camaros were being delivered before March of 2009?

Almost 62,000 in only 10 months isn't a bad start in this economy. If you simply project those numbers over 12 months were talking almost 74,000. While that's still a far cry from the magical 100,000 units a year some have speculated GM needs to sell for Camaro to be a success, you still need to figure west coast sales are still low due to availability and greedy dealer mark-up. Not to mention folks like me who are still waiting to learn what GM may offer in 2011 and 2012.

Agree the final numbers are a bit deceiving. More interesting however are the December sales number for both Ford and GM. Apparently Ford cleaned house in December.

Interested to see what this year offers.

so they were outsold by 5,000 units. thats pretty lame concidering the mustangs were run from the beginning of the year. the camaro didnt start until march.this doesnt include presold orders from october 08 right? just units made and sold from march 09. and does this survey or test start from the beginning of the 09 model year for mustang(fall 08)? or does it start from the january(09)?

i know 100k was the initial goal for units sold at, but i thought they changed the goal right around productions start? i think it was later changed to 60-70k units,or something like that. judging by this they achieved goal.

The numbers are total deliveries for the year so it counts pre-orders as long as those customers now have their cars.

It starts from January 09...model year doesn't matter. Total deliveries.

Its a shame GM couldn't catch them. I guess they were pretty much limited by production......but its their own fault they didn't start until March. Still a good effort though. Mustang sales were down 27% from '08, I'm sure Camaro took a chunk of these...

You also have to factor in that in the month of December Ford was offering huge discounts on Mustangs left in inventory. In these parts you were seeing at least $5000 off MSRP and as much as $10-12K off at some dealers. Meanwhile the local Chevy dealers were asking $5-$10K over MSRP for Camaros.

It was almost like Ford saw that Camaro might beat them for the year and decided to deeply discount current stock to push them over the top and also clear out room for the 2011MY coming around the corner. Heck it was a smart move if they actually planned it that way.

I noticed that Ford stepped up their incentives on the 2010 Mustangs a lot here in December. I'm sure they wanted to beat the Camaro but maybe more important for them is to get rid of the now outdated power train equipped models that nobody is going to want. Those things are going to be hot potatoes soon.

Even if the Camaro didn't edge the Mustang out. I think that the 5th Gen Camaro is a great success story in a very tough year for GM and the auto industry.

The numbers of the two are close and as the economy and jobs come back, both should be over 100,000 with no problem.

The numbers kinda surprise me for both cars. They both are incredibly appealing appearance wise IMO and more exciting than anything else in their lineup (except the `vette). I thought the numbers would be higher even with the economy. I guess the days of sales close to 300,000 in the late 70`s are gone forever.

yeah... people have too many choices... as there are more times of cars than ever... not a bad thing but times change... and you have to move with the times to survive and be profitable.
