NEWS: Priced: 2010 Ford Mustang Undercuts Base 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
I would assume that if the car mags are falling in love with the G8 GXP at a higher price point than the 2SS for its performance, they wouldn't have much of a leg to stand on if they dislike the Camaro based on the same criteria.
1. The new Mustang was pretty impressive to the people around it both times I went to the LA show.
2. Mustang's interior puts the Challenger's to shame... and I'm a Challenger fan. I'm not comparing the Camaro's until I crawl into the final version. The one at the show doesn't have the final interior.
3. There are about as many 16 year old girls driving Mustangs as are driving Corvettes.
If you really want to get into a discussion about Mustang demographics, throw your dice and take your chances, because I have them.
More men bought V6 Mustangs than V8 Camaros in 2002. More men turned to Mustang GTs than all men who bought LS1 F-bodies the final couple of years. Nearly 70% of LS1 Camaros came with automatics, while a majority of Mustang GTs are manuals.
I've broken that "only teenage girls buy Mustangs" many times myth before, and have no problem taking on that myth again.

I would also throw in there that many husbands purchase cars for their wives, including the cute little Mustang she loves.
When I was in highschool (Columbia, MD which is a very well off place) there were MULTIPLE girls who drove Mustangs and only one Corvette in the entire school which was a C4 and driven by a guy.
When I was in college (Clemson, SC) there were girls in SN95 and newer Mustangs all over the place, including girls in GTs. There were also plenty of guys in GT's, fox bodies, and even some in classic Mustangs. I can't name a single college girl I ever saw driving an F-body while I was there (6 years, undergrad and grad school).
Even at my work (Greenville, SC) there are girls driving Mustangs (one drives a yellow SN95 GT for example) and all the F-bodies are driven by men, this includes one V6 early 4th Gen.
The "girls drive Mustangs" stereotype or "myth" as you call it has proven true throughout my entire life, in two VERY DIFFERENT parts of the country. It has also proven true for my friends and family, which makes sense since they are in the same areas.
Mustangs are "cute", Camaros are "mean". Girls like cute, guys like mean.
I have faith that the Camaro will get good press from the enthusiast mags. I think it's handling and overall performance feel will get positive ink.
I believe the pricing is right, and although it's anecdotal, folks I have spoken to at car shows are pleasingly surpriased at the pricing points. Invariably, those who haven't hung on every tidbit tossed about on the internet react with a "Wow, that's a good deal!" when they hear the pricing.
In the final analysis? Potential buyers will sign the dotted line if the car and it's pricing are what they want. Non buyers will certainly have their opinions.
The more I'm arounf the new Camaro, the more of a smile I get on my face.
It is an as tough as it's ever been economic climate. Any car has to strike a very big emotional and big value chord to sell. The new Canaro has the goods on both counts. Things will play out, as they always do.

Well Paul, I hope this Camaro does very well sales-wise. Although this particular car doesn't hit my personal bullseye for what I wanted Camaro to be - I also suspect that this is the marque's last chance for success. It needs to be percieved as doing well, IMHO, for this brand to live on in the future.
My wife can handle the power of my Z28 (not to mention her dad's even-more-powerful '70 GSX) just fine, and that's one part of why she's a woman, and not a girl.

Girls like Mustangs.

unfortunately true. most girls would get scared in my bolt on high 13 second firebird. my mother, however, can thank my dad for being fearless of cars. I handed my mom the keys to my car when I had the 383 in it with ~400 rwhp and told her to dry it off after I had just finished washing it. I hear her wind out 3rd gear on the local rural highway type road. she came back and I asked her how fast she had gotten it up to. "oh about 80 or so." I told her I heard her wind out 3rd gear, thats about 120. then she goes "well ok I went over a 100 by a little bit"

well first of all to find a girl who knows how to shift a manual transmission is like finding a needle in a haystack. most girls wont get stick just because they like to multi task while driving. secondly , to find a girl who can actually drive a car and not worry about hitting things is the next thing. most girls, and i said girls because as you mature you become a woman and get better at everything, are scared of going fast. and having a car that can go fast and they know it car is even more intimidating to them.
