Easier or Harder to break rear end/driveshaft..

With IRS on the 5th gen, will it be easier or harder to break the rear end/driveshaft than the 4th gen?

depends what center section they use...if they stick with a 7.5" center section, we are screwed.. only thing else that would make it weak on hard launches would be the halfshafts, but im sure aftermarket ones would be avaible eventually

thanks, i dont know much about IRS as I have never had nor driven one before.

So, in general, what has more chance of problems in the rear. IRS or Solid rear. It would seem to me that IRS would have more chance of problems because i would think there is more parts envolved. any IRS experts out there? im hoping that the 5th gen does not have the same problems that the 4th gen did (10 bolt + 7.5")

C5's / C6's seem to do pretty well with IRS in the back . I think the diff is something along the lines of a Dana rear? Basically, the gears are almost bullet-proof, it's just the axles (half-shafts) that are more likely the "weak link" but even then, I haven't heard of too many problems. Although I think the Camaro IRS is going to be more along the lines of the '04 - '06 GTO, but again, I think it's been discussed, and I don't "think" there have been too many "problems" so to speak with the GTO's?????

As mentioned above, the halfshafts may be the weak link in the setup. It seemed to be a problem with the GTOs, but then again, there is aftermarket support for better halfshafts for those cars.

BMR makes a kit for the GTO's to tighten that rear up. I think they did the DS too. They should make one for the Camaro pretty soon.

I'd rather have drum brakes than a solid rear rotor!!! They warp like crazy...

Eh...the rear brakes on that set up look vented first off.
Next, if you are warping rear rotors, I would hate to see what the front ones look like.

In the rear subframe picture, that swaybar looks quite tucked away in there.

^^ ... YEah.. I've NEVAR warped a rear rotor... Why would they go from vented rears on 4th gens to a sold one on the concept. If they're looking there for penny pinching, they're cheating the consumers.

Where the heck IS the sway bar? On top there?....

just stop brake torque-in' it and get a line lock and you shouldn't have that problem.

You guys have obviously never owned a w-body. I'm a tech at a GM dealership and probably 80% of the cars with solid rear rotors have a pulsation coming from them and they are rusted like crazy. I know they weren't solid rotors but why do you think gm quit putting rotors on the rear for the trucks? Because they rusted like crazy and you could never turn them and still be over spec. At least the w-body rotors can be turned a few times before they go under spec. I'm glad my truck has rear drums, probably last me 120k+ before I need to replace them.
