Camaro Concept:z28 Vs.ss
#46
Sometimes the misinformation gets to me. Several points need to be made here.
Yes and those upgraded ratings are pure poop. There is no difference in the engines. At 90K+ miles with only a CAI and cat back installed, my otherwise bone stock car put down 268 / 305 to the wheels. Add in the drivetrain loss and tell me what these engines are really making. If anything, the SS rating is simply less of a fib.
You mean it was the only car in '97 to have the LT4 available, not all SS cars had this engine right? Because they only made like what, 100 or so of them with the LT4.
The Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks were SLP add ons and not specific to the SS. By that I mean anybody with a phone and a credit card could, and still can, buy these things from SLP. The front bar was upgraded to a 32 mm but the rear was left with the stock 19mm. The 1LE bars that everyone refers to are the '93 sizes of 32mm front and 21mm rear, even though that was the ONLY year for the 21mm rear. SLP also offered a 35mm front bar.
At some point the stiffer durometer trans bushing (1LE) replaced the standard piece for ALL cars. There is no difference in the camber bushing. They are solid on all cars. There is no difference in the caster bushing. There needs to be some void there for the thing to work (bad design really - the bushing tears itself to pieces over time). GM stopped producing the solid rear LCA (1LE) bushing
The Torsen diff is standard on ALL LS-1 cars from '99 on. An Auburn could be substituted as an option but why? The Auburn in my LT1 sucked.
The cover was an SLP add on and not specific to the SS. By that I mean anybody with a phone and a credit card could, and still can, buy these things from SLP.

No SS ever came with R compounds.
I'm not 100% on this one but I was pretty sure it was Mobil 1.
It wouldn't surprise me if SLP put something like Castrol in 'em though. Just look what the dumbasses did with the rear bumpstops. Anybody who knows anything and competes with their cars swaps the SS stops out for Z28 stops.

It's funny. Had it not been for SLP's involvement of hoodscooping, upwheeling and number floor matting Z/28's, during the second half of the 4th gen program, this whole question would be even more moot than it currently is.
Before circa 1998, stating that an SS (Camaro, that is) was higher performance than a Z/28 (no need to specify it as a Camaro), would have gotten you some funny looks - perhaps even some laughter.
Also, not many people would even refer to their classic Camaros as SS's, because really, it wasnt that big of a deal. Most of them came equipped with 295/300 hp L48 smallblocks and TH350 trannies. Big whoop. The ones that got the attention were the big block cars, and that's how people referred to them. People would say, "hey that's a big block Camaro", NOT that's a Camaro SS. Or if it came with the hotter and rarer L78 396, they'd call it an " L78 car" or a "375 horse car". The L35 396's usually went without note, since it was a lo-po boat anchor and weren't much to brag about.
Once the big blocks were gone, (Camaro) SS was replaced by Type LT which was itself replaced by Berlinetta.
Oh, one more thing on Z/28's '67-'69 power ratings. It was a joke. The Boss 302, AAR 'Cuda and T/A Challenger had the identical 290/290 hp/tq rating. Get it?
Figure the single carb 302 for around 350+ hp and with the optional crossram for around 400. The "blueprinted" engines used in the SCCA Trans Am series were putting out at least 450.
I posted a thread afew months ago about driving one of the few remaining '67 Z/28's. That same day I also drove a couple of L78 (Camaro) SS's. They were all wonderful cars - but Lordy, Lordy, Lordy........that Z/28 gave me goosebumps!

Sorry Stefan, but I'm going to have to be skeptical on this one. Don't take it personally, but I have a hard time believing a college student in Texas (I'm guessing Texas A&M from your sig....good school...my sis was a grad ) would have a hotline to those "in the know" for information on the 5th Gen. If I'm mistaken I guess I'll find out in a year or two .
I just find it extremely hard to believe that the Camaro wouldn't have AT LEAST an LS2 400hp available the first year. Not sure how realistic it is, but I'm hoping for an LS3 the first year , but to not even have an LS2 available would be completely assinine (sp?).

I have no insider information, yet I know Stefan is correct about the Z/28 coming in year two because it has been discussed here and by some who you might consider more believeable.

Forget the LS2, but who said it wouldn't have a 400 hp engine the first year?

Its alright to be skeptical, however you may want to do a search through the archives of this website, before you flame someone.

First off, I didn't flame any one. What I posted was in no way meant to be a flame. I even said "Don't take it personally", "If I'm mistaken I guess I'll find out in a year or two" and even gave a compliment to his school. How anyone can take what I posted as a flame is beyond me .
Second off, no need for me to do a search on this board. I've been checking on the 5th Gen forum regularly as soon as the Concept was released. Yeah, I've seen info that MIGHT suggest that whatever comes out with 450-500 hp (whether a Z28, SS or whatever they FINALLY decide to call the monster hp motor) would more than likely not be released in the first year, but the claim that they won't even have at least a 400hp V-8 is a new one on me.

My understanding:
First year: Base Camaros and Camaro SS (one would expect the SS to have hp that can match or beat all but the Mustang Shelby GT500.)
Second year: Camaro Z/28. (the Shelby killer. )
I think Stefan's hp numbers are a little low.
