Camaro Concept:z28 Vs.ss
#17
thing is with the SS, you get it as an option package, and you could add other option packages on like RS and have a SS/RS ( or RS/SS whatever it is)
you couldnt do that with a Z28, or am i wrong..
as far as i know you couldnt get a Z28/SS or a Z28/RS, or some other comibination...

RS could be added to any Camaro, including Z/28. SS and Z/28 could not be combined.
Z28 was a purebread race machine.... but it was originally available with only a 302 i believe.. due to restrictions in the racing series it was part of...
the SS was a package you added to your camaro.. not a seperate model like the Z28... with this package came bigger engines that were available than in the Z28.. and the SS was quicker in a straight line.. but the racing upgrades on the z28, besides the powerplant, made it quicker around a track
as for the 5th gen.. i'm hoping the Z28 is akin to the Vette's Z06.. it'll have the most horsepower, best brakes and suspension, and be the fastest Camaro in a straight line and around the track.. it wouldnt be available till like 2010-2012 this beast will start close to 40 grand.. and have well over 500hp
the SS would be the top model at the beginning, starting price around 28grand.. 450hp or so... this would be the one i get, unless i somehow become financially able to afford the top model
the badge has no bearing on which one i will get.. i just want a V8 that i can afford

*99.9% because back in 1968 the Stock class world champion was a Z/28, not an SS. (Yes it beat the big block SSs.)

you sure about that.. i couldve sworn there was some difference in the suspension setup even in the 4th gen

According to the above, the SS was the top dog, not the Z28. I understand that this is camaroz28.com and most of you guys are Z28 fans, but the SS really is the top of the line model with the exception of the ZL1 of course. I dont know how anyone can argue with this, the SS will obviouslly be the most powerful if they stay true to the Camaro roots, unless they make a ZL1. Personally, I dont think that either would be considered slow...both will be considerably fast. What is everyones beef with the SS? I like the SS. I cant beleive that we are splitting hairs over the smallest details. First one would state that Chevy is great and everything else is so-so, then they would state that the Camaro is great and every other Chevy is so-so, then they say that the Z28 is great and every other Camaro is so-so. Is all of this just because you personally own a Z28? I know a lot of guys on here will bash me for what I just wrote, but seriouslly, there is nothing wrong with an SS being the top model. The Z28 wont lose any respect over it, so stop getting so bent out of shape.

The Z/28 was erroneously rated at 290hp from 1967-1969. As I said in an earlier post, the NHRA world champion in stock in 1968 was a Z/28... not a SS396 of which many were competing in that class.
SS is the all-options (luxury) performance model.
Z/28 is the all-out race model.
Just leave it at that.

If you'd like a more accurate description of the SS should be that it is/was a "tuner" car, as basically that's all it was, a refined and tuned Z/28. No major differences or modifications, just a few adustments and tweaks to go with the badges and stripes.
