Why not ask for something better than an LS7?
Maybe next time your friend buys a Camaro, it will be such a car that he won't have to resort to dropping in a new engine, to go faster. Maybe he'll just need a couple hundred bucks in parts.

Damn you're greedy!

Me? I'd be perfectly content with THE LS7's 505 horsepower

Intake, exhaust cam LS7s have made over 600rwhp. I think some of them are making around 650rwhp, if I remember correctly. Hoiw much more power do you actually want?

An LS7 in a Camaro SS. :blah:

Taking you at your word, and your 'buddy' sprang the $18,000 for an LS7 crate engine, plus $$$ for instillation and programing, it's a sure bet that Camaro won't have this engine, and for anyone wanting a shot at affording this car, that's a good thing IMO.

First off, LS7 is a hand made, high cost and content, low production engine. The facility it's made at simply can't make more LS7s than it already does.

Secondly, the most cost effective way to create power is via supercharger. Though it's heavier, it's also far and away cheaper than an LS7. I can easily see the system being developed for the $100,000 Stingray being bolted to a smaller, lower cost engine for the "Super Camaro".

LS7s cost 18 grand. A supercharger & intercooler system is about 5, and produces the same power. Which do you think GM is going to go with.

Finally, by all accounts, the engines slated for Camaro aren't in production yet. The displacements are mostly in existence now, but the actual engines and horsepower isn't.

Re: All I know is that the 5th Gen better have an LS7

I dont believe id want 505hp on a lil 4" bore hypereutectic (sp?) piston. Thats asking a lot for a driven car.

It isnt as bad spread over the LS7's larger bore space.

500hp is pushing it on a 6.0L motor without at least a forged piston and a minor fuel pump upgrade and some tuning software.

I know some guys are "doing it already" but im talking about for 150K plus miles.

You make some good points, but the LS7 doesn't cost $18k more than an LS2. LS2 is what? $6k-ish? Then add supercharger + plumbing. . . that's an additional ~$5k.

Still less than an LS7, but alot more than just $5k. Not to mention, the supercharged engine would need to be redone correctly to be supercharged and to hopefully keep warranty repairs to a minimum.

And they keep saying weight is a big issue. I'm hoping for some 6.X liter LSx variant making 450-500hp in the top dog.

Well, I'm not sure how long that would last.

Production ready engine aren't, but they sure are ambitious.

I can't see why it wouldn't last that long. The engine is still not very stressed, even on the 650rwhp setup.

Graham is correct. LS7s are not $18k. It is only a matter of time before an LS7 shows up in an fbody, if it hasn't already happened. Katech was doing the swap a few weeks ago, and by now it could be done.
