? about insurance on modded Camaro

For those of you that are planning on doing $10k or more worth of mods to your Camaro, is it hard to increase your insurance coverage for those mods?

Depends on your insurer.

Hagerty, for example, is in the business of insuring antique, classic, and collector cars, and they're pretty friendly about covering mods.

Call around, or better yet, find an independent insurance broker, and have them call around for you.

A broker is someone whose commission is paid by the customer, as opposed to an agent, who is paid by the insurance carrier. Lots of brokers will call themselves agents -- your best bet is to just ask who pays their commission. If they dodge the question, they're either an agent or an idiot -- move on. A good broker understands that his answer is the one you're looking for and will be happy to answer.

you should be able to tell them the things you have done and money invested and show them some kind of receipt(and keep those just in case) for the things done. they should recommend a certain amount for you to add on to your current policy. it doesnt matter if you have 1,000 or 10k into it. you can still get more insurance on it.

You're doing $10,000 worth of mods to your Camaro (roughly 1/3rd of the car's price) which not only means you have alot of money to burn, but that you certainly aren't concerned about resale value and will almost certainly void your warranty (I don't see 10 grand worth of mods going to paint & body bolt ons), and you're worried about.....

........an increase in your insurence rate????!

lol - I'm not worried about the amount, it can't be more than a Z06 insurance would be. I was just wondering how you would go about getting insurance for the mods as well as the car.

Most likely depends on the mods you're planning.

.... and yes.... it CAN be more than Z06 insurence would be........Quite a bit more, actually.

Factory parts are less libel to theft and typically cost less to replace.

Z06 insurence isn't as much as one may think (high concentration of older buyers and low theft claims).

Simply changing to an aftermarket radio will affect your insurence rate.

You can find someone and someplace that will insure anything at the right price, so I don't think that will be a problem. It's just a matter of how much you're willing to pay.

You can insure ANYTHING -- for a price. My 4th gen SS has over $30k in mods and I have every part insured. Of course, I had to sign a statement that i would be driving less than X miles per year. Given my age, my driving record, and low miles the car is being driven, I am happy with the rate I am paying.

BTW, my 2000 SS is kinda fun to drive.

A lot of people are not familiar with the idea of using a broker as they are marketed to with the instructions of "see your local Insurance Company Name agent today!" by the insurance companies.

I have a broker I have been with for over 10 years. He's awesome and saves me money.

I've been with my broker since I started driving in 1996.

Thanks for the tip about the broker. I'll definitely look into that.

I did check up on rates and I was surprised to find out that the difference between a Camaro SS and a new Z06 was less than $10 a year. They wouldn't talk to me about increasing the coverage for potential mods. I would first have to buy the car and do my mods first before they would even begin to talk about the cost of it.

BTW, I am planning on doing a LS7 swap.
