Question 2000 Camaro- 3.8 to 5.7 Z71 or LT1 Conversion

I need some info, on swapping a 3.8 3800 out of my 2000 and putting in an LT1 or I have a chance to buy a Z71 motor (will it work?). Or will I come out better (cheaper) going back to the dealer later on and buy a zz4 crate or stock LT1.

actually the easies will be a LS1 swap.

If you can find a wrecked or rolled car with goood motor and drivetrain, and just swap stuff form one car to the otehr.

YOu could do a lt1 swap but its may be slightly trickier once you get into the different guages, but I guess since 97s have newre interior and lt1 should be able to work it out.

A zz4 crate motor, I daydream about this alot. BIggest problem is you will not be useing the computer but that is not what I am worried, I am more worried about the firewall issues, I was considering the possibilited of hacking aways and welding parts of the firewall into a more convieninant form. I kinda want to yank all the electronics, lose ABS, and everything, and have a carbed small blcok in the car, and all aftermarket guages, and fuels systems in the car.

Remember, you are going to need a PCM, transmission, drivesahft, rear end, maybe different springs to counteract the wieght differences of the motor, different guages.

I am also pretty sure you need a differnt K memeber. Not 100% sure do a search in the v6 section some guys hae swapped in v8s.

Personally I think the z71 motor would be difficult.

Jsut as an idea, might be easier to hook up the entire PCM and wiring harness out of the Z71. SO the motor and computer will think its still in a truck, but will actually be in the car, but then you ahve to deal with the guage problems.

I went toalley Chevrolet here in Atlanta today (they have a chevy performance center in the back) and talked to a friend of mine who has helped me on my 86'. He said the same thing, the LS1 swap would be the easiest, also the ZZ4 would have firewall problems(just like you said). The cost of a new LS1 (crate) is $4800 but with tax it goes up to $5600 w/o the throttle body.I'm gonna burn up the V6 until my warranty runs out LOL!! One thing though, he said I would'nt need to change my trans., chevy uses the same trans for the V6, Z-28 and SS (how true this is remains to be seen). So I think I'll start checking around for a wrecked SS or Z-28, if I run with the LT1 I'll just order the guages factory. Oh yea, the performance center is like a grown mans toyz-r-us LOL!! All the different motors are laying on the showroom floor from the carbed 350s' to injected 502s'.

I have an option in that my 1996 Formula is for sale. This car is black, auto, 3.42 gears, Torsen differential. LT-1 V-8. Mileage is just 30,600 & I am the original owner. Car was purchased new from Lou Sobh in 9/96. Selling as this is now an extra car. The low mileage is was just 5 miles each way to work & car has been seldom driven since 3/96. Also I live in Atlanta. If interested send an email.

yes you will. neither the auto nor the manual will work.

the motor from a 99+ pickup will work, but you would have to disable several things when you get a custom computer module programming. the VATS will no longer work and a few other things. the block in the truck is the same as the car so it will bolt up using V8 crossmembers.

this has been discussed in lt1 tech countless times. you can put a ls1 in the car but it will cost you more than the cars worth. the lt1 is not that much of a problem but the ls1 is a taller engine. and the money it would cost for the ls1 motor you could buy a lt1 put the difference in the money into the lt1. and have a much more reliable engine and alot more power. but you going to have trouble making a ls1 fit. it has been done by about 6 people but why, the extra money would make that lt1 ungodly fast. and the extra trouble its not worth it. i can be done though. because i know someone that has a BLOWN AND BOTTLE FED 572 big block (yes 572) in a 95 formula it runs high 8s. you can make anyhting work but
IS IT WORTH IT. thats up to you

Ok guys here goes. I've been searching for all options and this is what I've come up with so far.
1) the Ls1 swap would be the easiest, if I do that the guy at Nalley Chevrolet said the install would be "quik and painless", plus I can build it up to the horses I want without losing everyday driving abilities and It'll be under warranty for 3 years-cant beat that- ( I want 400-475hp) with simple mods (MAF, airbox, Hypertech stage 2 chip, shift kit (for the ET's), SLP cam and Borla catback loudmouth. Last but not least Vortech supercharger, around $3000 ( the very last thing I will do, but it will be done).
2) I could run with the LT1 BUT.....I think I would come out better getting fresh factory guages (150mph) and the same mods. Like you guys said, it will work, but it'll take some work LOL!! Plus I can get an LT1 very, very easy ( for some reason they are easy to find in Atlanta, go figure-$1000-$1500!!).
3) The zz4 would have the most problems ( sorry mustangeater82, I guess I'm just hard headed) but the racing shops I've been to will do the install but will not warranty it longer than 1 year.

Right now I'm adding a couple of small mods to the six (K&N filter, MTI airlid, shift kit and maybe a little programming next week). The 3800 is OK but even though I have'nt had 2 weeks yet I feel I have to do somethin. When I buy the motor the mods are goin in before the install. the 2000 Camaro will have it's own page so The install will be documented. Also if no-one knew this, you can buy Camaro and Corvette LS1's on E-Bay.com
