Fact or Fiction? PHR says 300 HP V6 Standard

FYI: This is posted just to put the info out as I can not back any of this up with any other posted info at this time.

At one time PHR has some very accurate info but after the Camaro Plant story the info looked like it was turned off. This is from the PHR April issue page 94.

Not So Fast Camaro Breath

If you've been saving your cash for a new V8 Camaro you may have to settle for a V6. Due to tighter Fuel Economy Standards and Planned allotment of V-8s in truck , it looks like Chevy will have to limit Camaro V-8 Production in the first year to just 7,500 units. {[Translation : big dealer mark-ups and long waits.] On the good side, Chevy has killed the lo-po V-6 version, making the $25,000 300 HP V-6 the base model. This may have been partially in response to the anouncement of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which will start around $24900 and be equipped with the 300 HP V-6 and six-speed manual transmission.

Take this at face value as I can not back any of this up with any know info. It may be like many things we hear and have some truth in it but not all of it.

Scott may be able to give us a nay if this on the wrong track.

As stated please this as with any published info do not believe everything you read unless you can find info to back it up elsewhere.

i doubt they'd limit it to 7.5k units with V8's in the first full year. That would be suicide versus the masses. If anything you'd think they'd have more V8's and then head toward more V6's as people who haven't been saving for the camaro specifically start to come take a look at the cars they've seen rumbling by...

I don't believe it. Even if it is true it doesn't bother me since I am waiting a year or two so all the bugs are ironed out.

That only bothers me if these 7500 cars aren't LS3/LS7/LSA powered.

It is FICTION. That 7,500 number is NOT right at all. I talked to Scott, that number is "absolutely ridiculous".

So it's verified that the 7500 V8 production number is bogus, but how about the DI'd 300 HP 3.6 as the BASE engine??!! Any verification on that yet?

If the DI'd 3.6 is standard, we may have a world class Camaro in BASE form, and a truly American muscle car in V8 Z/28 and SS form.

Think about it: The base Camaro could easily be considered by folks considering the following cars:

Accord Coupe EX V6 6 speed manual (3.5 J35 engine, 268 HP)

Nissan Altima 3.5 SE 6 speed manual (3.5 VQ engine, 280 HP)

Heck, why not throw in the Infinity G37 Coupe with a 300 horse 3.7 VQ and a 6 speed manual? BMW 328i 6 speed coupe?

The DI'd 3.6 opens up a world of possibilities, not so much by price, but by engine and technological tour de force. People like "high tech" sounding engines. And when you say you have a 300 horsepower V6 that's got DOHC, 24 valves, variable valve timing, and high pressure direct inject fuel injection, it makes people's eyes open wide and go "oooooohhh". That stuff sells.

I will just say that I will not be a bit surprised if the base 2010 V8 Camaro outperforms what was the top level 2002 V8 Camaro.

Well, if you believe some of the doom and gloomers on here, since the CAFE reports came out you'd think GM was going to quit making the V8 tomorrow and all Camaros will now be equipped with either the 2.5 Iron Duke or a 350 Diesel

I seriously doubt a 300hp 6 will out perform an ls1...on the bumper til 100 at best, and nowhere near that close if its over 3600lbs

oh Sheet...error, thought you were talkin about the v6

we'll see about the base V8

So I'm suppose to be impressed that 8 years later GM can put a v8 out with more than 350hp.

It will also weight more and I'd be willing to bet the 1/4 mile times will be slower with more power.

Why should I be happy with a new camaro that is heavier, more money and slower than a base 4th gen v8.
