Budget Cam swap

Hey everyone, Im making this post for my GF. She has a almost completely stock 94 z28, only thing that is not stock is deleted cat and cutout and appearance.
She wants to put a cam in it but she doesnt have alot of money to spend on her camaro and is a full time student.
I tell her that bolt ons would be better to do than straight to a cam swap but I think she is gonna gather parts and do it all at once like I did.
She got a almost brand new CC306 camshaft for $50 that she wants to put in her Car.

Ok now the questions

Whats the cheapest safest way we can put the cam in the car.

Whats the best budget springs for the CC306? Gonna keep stock rocker arms, lifters and pushrods.

She will need a converter for that Cam. yes? She wants a yank 3600 like mine lol, but thats like a $1000 right there.

For the CC306 will she need gears in the back other than stock?

Mail order tune should suffice.

It would be an interesting test to see how a legit "CAM ONLY" lt1 would preform. And im talking Cam only lol, no CAI and Manifolds. But I think she will gather all those parts.

I honestly think the CC306 would be better off in my car and she would be better off with my Cam (CC503) but I dont feel like taking 2 cars apart to swap cams.

Heres the car,

Re: Budget Cam swap

Nice car...nice gal too

CC306 is a bit big for Stock heads. And yea you'd def wanna stall it.

you'd make MUCH better use of that cam than she would.

And on a side note, personally speaking, I wouldn't do a cam at all without some LT headers. But thats just me

Re: Budget Cam swap

Agreed, very nice looking car and a lovely lady to. There has to be a better cam than the 306 for her. I think she just wants a chop in the idle so wouldn't a 503, AI 226/234, or even a hot cam do that for her and be better for the use with stock heads?

We can all say that money would be better spent on the headers, intake and so forth but if all she wants is a choppy idle and if it doesn't actually HURT the motor to retain the stock exhaust and other components then lets figure out which cam will give her what she wants.....however i don't think its the 306, it may be too big for her application.

True I got the mindset of In/Out fast as possible :P

Yea the 503 or Hotcam would be a much better choice.

Re: Budget Cam swap

Don't think she cares about sound to much. She likes my 503 idle. She just wants to go fast with a cam and the supporting mods to operate the cam properly.

Only reason she chose the cc306 is because a friend took it out of his car
And gave it to her for $50

So the cc306 even on stock heads, would it make more power than the cc503?

Re: Budget Cam swap

There was a graph laying around somewhere based on dyno results of 4 different cams on STOCK heads. In all cases the 503 beat out the 306 in HP/TQ until it got to about 6700 rpms if I remember right. But get head work done and it's a whole different animal lol.

If I can find it I'll post the link.

Heres the graph link:

But heres also a LT1 Video of a "cam only" Lt1. It says Cam only but he also has LT Headers and True Duals.

Still for $50 I'd probably put it in

Heck I got my Hotcam for free

Re: Budget Cam swap

That's me, lol. I'm NOT putting my engine back in without a nice set of longtubes, which of course leads to an exhaust. Cam too, with all supporting stuff for it. Yeah...since that cam was offered by a friend to me so cheap, I couldn't really pass it up, though I've been told it is too large to run on stock heads

I also need a torque converter which I will work on getting, yeah, and a k&n cold air intake would be nice too...

Maybe I can get head work done one day if I'm lucky.

Well I'd just like to say your car looks fantastic. So of course you gotta have the power to back it up

As far as CAI, you could pay their $250 price, but I did just was well with a $40 pipe set and buying a K&N Cone Filter.

Like this link says, go ahead and install it. Then the base work will be there when you get better heads.

Re: Budget Cam swap

Thanks!
That's the goal. Now to get the money! I did aesthetic stuff last summer and now want to do performance stuff...I see people modding their cars and going to the track, doing something else and going to the track again; I want to be able to do that as well
