LT1 M6 Vs. LS1 Auto -- Story and Question

Last night my car (see sig) was running like crap. Today I found out why: some stupid idiot left my oil cap off after adding a half quart. Whoever does that is a complete moron!!! They deserve death to cleanse the gene pool!

Anyway, my friend and I were driving to the next big town on the four lane when a LS1 blows by us and slows way down. My friend, in a 3rd gen 305HO, took him up on his offer and was the first to fall.

Well, I know I can’t go past 109, and my car is noticeably running poorly (though at the time I didn’t know why). But, I decided what the hell and crept up to him in fifth, then fourth.

We’re rolling at 70 MPH and I think I was at like 3500 RPM. I can’t remember who jumped but it was on. Until about 5000 RPM, I was right with him, then he started pulling the road out from under me. I shifted into 5th right as I governed out at 109.

We pulled over and had a few laughs. I didn’t tell him that my car was running like **** because it would have been pointless and sounded like I was making excuses. He said he had Flow master cat-back, K&N cold air induction, and a Hypertech reprogrammer.

My two questions are would a stock LT1 six speed take a stock LS1 automatic in the quater (if they had the same miles and the drivers were the same skill, etc., etc.) ? In my situation?

Sounds like a pretty good run, but to answer your question, no, an LS1 will pretty much always beat an LT1 (stock for stock), but it doesn't take too much work to make an LT1 run with an LS1.

That run sounds about right. Most LT1's can stay pretty even with the LS1's til about 70mph or so. Then the LS1's just start walkin'. Also why were you shifting into 5th at just over 100? I don't have a 6pd but can't you get to around 90mph or more in 3rd? That would keep you in 4th at the most. Maybe your shifting too low.

Jay-Roll, I shift at 3000 to 3500 in normal daily driving, which is what I was doing until the Firbird rolled by. Like I say, this wasn't a planned event. I shifted out of fourth at just over 5000 RPM: "Until about 5000 RPM, I was right with him, then he started pulling the road out from under me. I shifted into 5th right as I governed out at 109." Also, keep in mind that I had a hole in my valve cover the size of a half a dollar. My car wouldn't even spin the tires in first earlier that day! Normally, it's hard not to!
