94 LT1 Hot when idle
I have a 1994 Camaro Z28, that runs perfectly fine (most of the time) when driving/pushing the accelerator. But when I am sitting idle at a stop light, or leave my car running for a few minutes, the temp will steadily climb, until into red. I have noticed though, if I am parked I.E in a drive through waiting, if I push the gas, the temp drops. I have checked my fans, they seem to be working from what I can tell. I just find it odd that if I press the gas, the temp goes down. What kind of water pumps do these cars have? Are they mechanical, or electrical? I know it isn't driven off the belt like normal. Thank you for any input!

Re: 94 LT1 Hot when idle
The stock water pump is gear driven off the back of the cam sprocket. As RPM increase, coolant flow should increase.
The first fan (or both on low, if you have a late model year 94) is programmed to come on at 226°F, the second fan (or both on high) at 235°F. Verify the fan operation. Scan it for codes. There are codes for problems with the fan control relays, and for a faulty coolant temp sensor circuit.
