Higher gear quicker or slower? 4.10-3.73's.
Well just want some opinons on my gear swap. I have always ran higher gearing 3.23's, 3.42's ,3.55's and with these gears my car always hooked up decently, therefore it ran good times for the mods, weight etc... Now when I put the 12bolt in my car, I had a set of 4.10's for it, my goal was to run 10's on motor and by all calculators they should be just right for 28" tires and a 7000rpm rev limit by stock PCM. Now the car has a new 383, alot more torque, leaves real hard and spins for 150-200' on the street. Still the car ran a 1.47 60' still had to be spinning, 1/8th mile time was slow 6.90@98mph then the car picks up 29.8mph from the 1/8th to the end where it finally stopped slipping the tires(10.82@127.8mph). I am changng gears to 3.73's tommorow b/c that change will allow me to go 140+mph before hitting the rev limit of the stock PCM. I am thinking that the swap to 3.73's should slow the car down in the 1/4 on motor b/c it's geared just right with the 4.10's, the shiftlight comes on about 200' before the end of the 1/4 with the 4.10's. But since it spins the tires so much with the lower gear, i think it may actually go quicker on motor. Now when the n2o is engaged teh car should run mid 9's on a clean pass but the only way to find out is to try it, the car does have a transbrake, 4500 converter and 28x10.5 slicks so it should leave good with 3.73's. What you guys think?

When I went from 3.42s to 4.10s I had hoped for a huge gain as the 4.10s are almost perfect for my combo. I was a little disappointed when I only gained a few hundredths in the 60 and less than a tenth on the big end. And that's with no tire spin. Since I went with drag radials I have never spun the tires.
I think that with a modern converter that's right for your combo that minor gear changes will have minor effects.

Exactly what I was thinking, well with the addition of the 3.73's, competition engineering rear shocks and a new pair of slicks the old T/A may go 10.50's before I turn on the n20. All I need is a sub 1.4 60'. Well see Later.
