Manual steering on a roadrace/autocross car.

Does anyone run a manual steering rack and do a little road racing or auto crossing? I'm just trying to delete a few things for weight savings and gain a little more room in the engine bay.

I guess I wouldn't have to worry about overheating the power steering fluid or installing a cooler if it would work.

So is a manual steering rack unheard of in the auto crossing and road racing community?

Here is a link to the road track I will be visiting a few times this season.

Is a manual rack and pinion pretty much a drag car thing or what.

Do you know of any corner carving cars that have a manual rack, maybe 1st gens or older Mustangs?

That would take a lot of muscle to manually turn a set of sticky tires.....I sure wouldn't do it.....at least for auto-x use. Besides, its not like your lap times are going to improve any from the minor weight drop or power gain......I'd bet they would drop from your ability to not correct quickly....I hate to think what would happen if you accidently dropped a wheel off track and had to make major adjustments quickly.

I'd also like to get out to MAM, but I dont think I will....

Dude,
I was gonna try the Manual rack and pinion this season, but all the feed back I get is "don't do it". Us AI/CMC guys will be at MAM on the June 30th-July 1st weekend you should do your NASA HPDE that weekend. Then you can hang with all us GM AI guys.
