Any Way You Can Run No MAF On '94+ LT1???
i saw a guy that i think was from the EFA thats been coming to my local dragstrip since the end of last season. hes got a black Z 6sp with Welds. i think the license plate is- 1LE 2TRY
anyhoo, not only does he NOT have any of the smog, AC, air pump, anything thats not needed to clean up the engine bay, relocated ALT., but he also runs NO MAF. now, im not sure if it's a '93 car or not 'cause i cant remember what he told me, so im wondering- to anyones knowledge here, can you run w/o a MAF on a '94+ car??
i asked him how he managed that and he said "i just started taking things off one day and seeing if everything would still work w/o it." i know he's just pulling my leg there. he's either got a '93 car, or some SERIOUS programming/different comp.
what do you think??

Just remove the MAF sensor. The PCM will default to a crude speed-density mode. It will run, but the tune will need to be optimized.
Or get an aftermarket engine management computer, and run it in speed-density mode.
94 Formula, where's the MAF ???

Just like Fred said, plus...
You can also make it run in speed density with the stock PCM by using TunerCat (it's a simple checkbox). Then you can tune with VE tables.
That's what I've been doing lately, and it seems to run better than with my 110K mile MAF sensor...

so let me get this right, i can just take off the MAF and the car will just default to speed density mode? im assuming the car probably wont run worth a crap though w/o some tuning, correct? how would i go about getting/doing the tuning it would take to make it run w/o the MAF?
lastly, what are the advantages to running W/O a MAF, as opposed to WITH one? anything major?? is it worth it? why did GM switch??
thanks, jon

You can run in speed density by simply unplugging the MAFS, but it kind of a kludge--the fans will come on, along with the SES light.
You can bypass those things by reprogramming the PCM to run in speed density mode (with TunerCat or LT1_Edit).
The best way to begin tuning is to log your driving in all RPM ranges, and then run the log and your PCM tune through VEMaster. Do a search in the PCM section on this board for more info.
I believe GM went back to MAFS because it is better for the mass-market, and if the sensor is working, it works really well. But you can eventually outflow the sensor once you make some high HP.

To tell if its a 93 look at the interior, the ***** will be gray and yellow, and the 94+ they are black and white. The guages are yellow vs. Green too.
Also if looking at the intake of the car the fuel cross over tube on the fuel rails will be in the rear of the intake and the 94+ its on the front. Look on his mainfolds/headers the 93 will have the ports on the front on driver, and rear on passanger. The 94+ will have the hook-ups on the front for the driver side, and the front for the passanger.
That info should help to determine the year next time you see the car....
