The electronic version ups the line pressure a little bit. But the mechanical version actually uses ball bearings in the valvebody to adjust shift firmness.
With my Z28 I didn't chirp second until after the shift kit. With my V6, I have a manual, and I do a whole lot more than just chirp them in second.
The Electronic one is about 20 bucks, the real deal is about 100.
The other advantage to a shift kit is that it makes the clutches engage quicker - for quicker shifts, The faster the clutches shift, less time they touch, the less heat they build up. So a shift kit is a good start to making your tranny last longer.
The other things you can do are to install a
relocation filter,
deep pan (with drain plug),
transmission cooler,
and run braided stainless steel lines.
those things will keep your tranny running top notch for 150,000 to 200,000+ miles.
