Just keep them cleaned regularly (at least once a week) and wax/polish them often as well. Don't let the brake dust have a chance to settle on the wheels for very long or the heat generated will kinda bake the dust onto the wheel., which could then cause etching.

For regular cleaning, I use plain car wash soap (Z7). For tougher jobs, I like Meguiar's Gold class wheel cleaner, although it's very acidic. Eagle One A2Z is another good wheel cleaner that isn't too strong. Clay is good to use on wheels too when trying to remove tough stains.

I use 2 soft bristle wheel brushes. One larger face brush for the outside of the wheel and one slim brush that I got a walMart for the inside of the wheel. Looks great afterwards!

Do not let the brake dust sit on them for too long, you can clay your wheels and then Zaino away, your wheels will look good for a long time.

I put a few coats of the Z-5 on my chrome wheels. Makes them VERY easy to keep clean and it protects from the brake dust.
