Tranny / Torque converter questions

Hey all,
I've been driving my Camaro around for a while now. When I first got it, if you were on the gas hard, it would occasionally miss the 3~OD shift. As soon as you let off the gas, it would catch and you would be on your way again. Well, it just got worse. Now, at every shift point, it acts like it doesn't want to shift, and then once it decides to, it will shift hard into the next gear. I'm wondering if this is a tranny, the torque converter, both, either, neither, you get the point? It has the 700R4 OD tranny.
Next question. Depending on what needs replaced, does anybody know of good places to get a tranny, or places to get a tranny rebuilt, or buy one? (are the beefed up ones on ebay any good?) If it needs a torque converter, what are good ones, and where would I get one? What RPM stall are acceptable for still being street driven?
Thanks.

Sounds like a line pressure or governor probem. Is the kickdown cable adjusted right?

And just a little advice, don't buy a tranny from a non-reputable place (ebay) if it needs a rebuild get it done at a good local place with a warranty.

I agree with Codey, it sounds to me like you are having problems with your Throttle valve. 4L60's have a real cranky TV, and it can come out of adjustmant real easy. Under light throttle check your shift points. With the old 4L60's(commanly known as 700R4) the 1-2 shift should be between 10-14mph, and the 2-3 shift around 20. The TV alows aTF to go up behind the shift valve and work againced gov. pressure to delay the shifts so the car can stay in the high RPMs longer, if the TV cable is not ajusted right then the car will stay in gear even longer, not a problem...BUT if is shifting too early it can burn up the clutches because the boost vavle dosent have enough time to kick up the oil PSI to lock the frictions and steels together in the clutch drums.

I would also change the filter, you might have a clogging problem due to worn parts getting into the screen...if you have black ATF this is not a good sign. A clean filter will alow more Gov. PSI to the shift valves. IE better shifts

I spent the better part of an hour ajusting the TV cable on a chevy truck the other day with a 4L60...not fun at times. You got to get it just right, and the tech that put the engine in didnt...causing that thing to knock the fillings out of you teeth every time it shifted.

As for not shifting into 4th gear at WOT...only C4 corvettes with the 4L60's will...I think that all 4L60E's will shift into OD at WOT but our thirdgens wont without a vette valve body.

Sorry about the long reply,
Good luck man,
Erik

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to replace the tranny / torque converter. After driving it home from school, I now have no reverse, and it will only shift out of 1st going downhill (once you are over first gear speed). Anyway, at the minimum, it is going to get a 87+ 700R4 (=4L60). I've heard the the 87+ are better than the previous ones. What is the difference between the 4L60 and the 4L60E? Is it possible to put a 4L60E in my car? I assume it needs a computer of some sort, which is where the problem is.
Also, does anybody have a recommended place to get trannys? I've had a recommedation for bowtieoverdrives, any comments? What torque converters are good? What RPM stall should I have for a street driveable car? Lockup / non-Lockup? (I don't even know what the difference is )
Thanks for the replies.

I use the 1988 & up units, most 87's had early design valve body. If you are looking for a good performance unit?, go to https://www.pro-built.net/index.cfm?...t&productid=35 This will give you an idea of whats in the unit. Go with the A.C.T. 9.5" torque converter with lockup. They come with a one year warranty too.

Do you not have any reliable transmission shops near you?

Most good shops can install all of the same parts as the internet places can. And the waranty is local.
