gonna beef up my 305 a bit

i said before i was gonna get a 350.. but that fell through due to im gonna need a new transmission and a whole bunch of other ****. so thats history for now..

ok so i pulled my engine out (1986 sbc 305).. everything is stripped on the block except the crank.. doing that tomorrow

i was wondering what i should do, im having a hard time deciding what to buy.. i wanna get higher compression pistons, p and p heads, high performance cam, lifters, rockers.. intake and headers.. new carb if i can afford, i figure i can jsut rebuild mine

i got 2.5k cdn to do all this.

tomorrow i am gonna wash the block and all the parts and take it to get hot tanked for $40..

any suggestions for pistons, rings, rockers, cam etc?

im gonna try and see if i can get some deals.. since my mechanics class orders 10k a year from this one parts store, we get resonable discounts.. also at a machine shop.. my friends dad owns a performance shop and im gonna see if he can hook me up.

Brother, I've been down that road trust me, you'll pay more and be disapointed with the power. If you've got $2500, go to "Autozone"($700) or a junkyard($500-700) or somewhere and find a 350 and trade the 5.0L for the core.

I glad you said what youu said and all

I'm keeping my engine, and fixing it up, probably after I get and install a 350 though, as this is my daily driver, so I can't go without an engine for to long.
why I'm keeping the 305 and fixing it up is simple, its something to do, and it will keep the cars numbers matching just in case my car actually turns out to one day be worth something
Plus it would be interesting to see how far you can take a 305....
Plus my garage would look really pimp with a spare engine in it, I'm unfortunatly only 19, and as such, don't have money to burn for alot of cool stuff for my garage, so if all else, it will create atmosphere
Unfortunatly I havent beefed up my 305 at all, minus abit of weight reduction, as my carb and alternator are on the frits, and I'm saving up for a junkyard shopping spree
But I have heard of a 305 getting 300+ hp, I may be wrong, I'm not saying I have seen it, or anything like that but i have heard oldy moldy gear heads (my grandfathers friends) and a web site (don't have the url, sorry ) mention getting 305s up to almost 400 hp, I personally figure its possible, but expensive, but best of luck with it

Since you have it all apart (and refuse to go to a 350), follow the parts in my sig. And do your heads according to the instructions at the end of my sig. 300 hp feels pretty good, even when it comes from a 305

2.5k we can work with.

Buy a set of aluminum heads, Im not really sure what the good 305 heads cost but someone will be along in a sec with something. Buy a cam, like a 2000 stall convertor, get the block bored to .030 and buy a set of forged pistons. Get a full exhaust system with headers built, and then buy yourself a small like 75-150 shot of NO2. Now you will be moving pretty quick

Edit: Oh and suspension I forgot that, before you so anything buy a rear suspension kit, Summit sells them for a fair price and get some Subframe Connectors. Also not that bad price wise.

since it sounds like you are gonna do the actual work yourself you can come up with a pretty strong little motor for that money.
look at the comp cams extreme energy line of cams, some like the 268 or 274 woudl be nice. stock rockers will be fine.
add a nice dual plain intake that you can prolly pick up used for about half of what they cost new. a performer rpm type intake will work great. what ever intake you get, gasket match it before install. a little bit of work can help a lot with air flow.
you can stic to teh q-jet if you qwant, it will certainly be better for your mileage and stuff, but for more power from tejh little mouse you may want a small holley, something mechanical secondary is always my favorite, i woudl suggest a 650 or 700 cfm model to gain teh greatest torque curve, a 750 will give you more upper rpm power, but the extra volume may cost you a bit of lower rpm power.
for heads you can either do the ported stocker, or soem world products torquer 305's. teh torquers have a 58cc chamber to support good compression with flat top/stock style pistons. either set of heads woudl benefit greatly form a little clean up work and a good 3angle valve job.
then jsut freeshen up teh ignition with a new col and stuff and you shoudl be good to go. only thing you shoudl really need to do to the distributor is change teh bushign to get a better total number out of it.
from all of this with proper gearing and traction shoudl be able to net low 13's once it is all tuned in.

good luck

later

It should feel even better coming from a 305 actually. Considering what they come with stock and how most people shun the 305 and skip to the 350 that comes with alot of power already.

I think those cams are just way too much for anything but a race only 305. The absolute limit for a daily driver, IMHO, is the XE262--and you better have something like 3.42 or 3.73 gears to boot! For power in the useable band, i.e. under 4000 rpm, I would choose an XE256 or Crane PowerMax 260 or 266.
