clunk from koni double adjustable?

my car has been making a clunk going over bumpy roads, much more noticeable at slower speeds (under 30). i thought it was a bad wheel bearing. so i changed them.
unfortunatlely, the noise is still there.
now i think that my drivers side koni double adjustable shock is making the "clunk". i bought it used two years ago. i autocrossed about ten times per season (maybe slightly more).

i drove up some rhino ramps, and had a friend push down on the car from above. seems like the clunk is coming from the shock area. any other way to diagnose a broken koni?

Has it done this since install? If so, are you sure you bottomed out the shock nut? If you dont, you will get a loud clunk on bumps.

mudge, i think that top nut is loose. i'm gonna take the assembly apart on sunday and tighten it down good.

That's a good possibility the nut is loose, I had the same exact problem. It's hard to get in there to work. good luck

If you have stiff springs, you really have to make sure that you have enough clearance to bottom out that nut. I had the same issue with my fronts, even compressing the springs not much more than an inch was a real task, they are 600# springs on the front. I have visible wear on the screw itself, and the rubber on the brakes got cought in the screw, that got eaten off, as well as a washer that got twisted off. Those springs were tough to get down, and they obviously beat the crap out of my compressors too :)

So when I thought I had it bottomed out, I was wrong, and had a clunking on the right hand side on bumps and boy the suspension felt soft too (all spring, no shock), so R&R again, bottom it out, and voila.
