Walbro in-tank pump install how many people have reused the factory fuel bucket??

I'm in the middle of installing my Walbro in-tank fuel pump & I have a question how many people on here have actually reused the factory plastic fuel bucket? And what are the pro's & cons of NOT reusing it? Where can I get the wiring harness adapter and the screen for this fuel pump?
I have the GSS340M which is the high pressure pump.
I used this web-site as a guide to do the install & it has helped me out a lot so far but it doesn't look like this person reused the fuel bucket if he is around how has this worked for you and have you had any problems from NOT using it?

Unhappy

Read these 2 threads and they'll answer your questions. I'm in the same situation. Was gonna get a Racetronix unit but since I already had my pump I'm gonna stick w/ it and just do modifaction to get to fit. Good luck and let me know how it turns out and any details that may help me w/ the install.

Can anybody else help us out here? I have heard conflicting story's if you do not reuse the fuel bucket? Also my fuel pump didn't come with the plug that hooks to the factory wiring harness, I was told to cut the end off of the factory plug and put 2 female connectors on the end & plug them into the fuel pump and fill it with silicone or non-conductive epoxy. That don't sound very good to me considering I thought fuel would eat through the silicone?
PLEASE HELP ME

I'm using the Racetronix pump, and the fuel bucket. Jack @ Racetronix will gladly answer your questions.

I have read some of his posts and he is really stuck in his ways about re-using the fuel bucket for GOOD reason I can imagine but that is ONLY with the racetronix fuel pump. I have the Walbro and I am gonna try to get it to work with the bucket but I have seen SO many other people NOT reuse and I was just looking to see if a few months or a year down the road what kind of problems occured for them?

You would only run into a problem if you were under a 1/4 tank of gas and you were going around turns at speed.

Could produce a lean condition or ruin the pump.

What is so hard about re-using the bucket? Just curious cuz I've never done it but I will be very soon.

On the stock pump the hole in the bottom is offset were the hole on the Walbro is in the middle & is a little bigger so you will have to modify the hole a little bit with a dremel or something like that to get it to fit properly. But I have seen people NOT use it at all and NOT have any problems but I think I'm gonna spend the extra time and do it right.

If you modify the hole, the pump might fit but it will not seal and can suck unfiltered fuel from the bucket or under low tank conditions run dry and fry the pump. It is imperative that the seal be 100% that is why the Racetronix pump is machined and fitted with a gas resistant seal. If you decide to try and modify the bucket then it will be scrap as you will never be able to get it to seal as you will not have a prefectly round and smooth surface to for a gasket to seal on.

I got rid of my plastic bucket....no problems but then again I don't try auto-x'ing while running on empty.

ok well, I reused my bucket with no problems...I used a stock sock, modified the rubber top gasket a little (cut off the two corners) and it fit fine. If I had really wanted to get fancy, I could have used some fuel safe silicon at the bottom where it seals to the bucket, but honestly It didn't seem to matter too much.

Complete directions:

That is the worst part... what appears to be working just fine on the outside in fact is not working properly on the inside. You will never know how much unfiltered fuel is making its way into the pump or how much its capacity is reduced without doing a bench test with a flowmeter. The pump MUST seal 100%. Anything less is trouble waiting to happen. There is no silicone sealant that is rated for long time immersion in today's gas. If someone were to use silicon sealant and particles where found to have entered the pump the warranty would be void. The only proper way to seal the pump’s inlet in the bucket is with a Buna or Viton seal as they are the only gasket materials which will survive in today’s pump gas.

I reused my factory bucket and have had no problems. All I needed to do to get it to fit was grind down one of the fins on the inside of the bucket. You'll see what i mean if you try to put in your walbro. I also reused the rubber gasket from the stock pump and it fit perfectly. if this seal doesn't fit 100% perfectly, oh well, it allowed the factory pump to last 7 years.

What does the factory use for glue? It must seal fine since they use it. I don't see fuel buckets falling apart and GM fixing them. This is the glue I used. I posted the name before, my pump sealed up fine, no problems at 1/2 or 1/4 tank at speed.

There is a difference between glue and a sealant. Glue can not be used to seal the pump's inlet to the bucket's checkvalve.
The factory pump uses a molded rubber seal at the bottom of the factory pump, NOT GLUE. This is similar to the Buick pump shown here: http://www.racetronix.com/Fuel_Pump_Ident.html
The buckets are thermally tacked closed and a special fast cure epoxy is used. This epoxy is not available as a consumer item.
