Lightbulb 3 million more cars being scrapped each year than being bought

Now with 3 million more cars being scrapped each year than are being bought, experts see tremendous pent-up demand.
A slimmer faster GM has a lot to look forward to in the coming years. If a car company can break even this year or next, then in 2011-12 they are going to be rolling in cash.

Yeah, I've been talking to ppl about this for awhile. Eventually just due to wrecks, failures, and people realized the end is not here; people will HAVE to purchase cars again. Used car prices will start going up as there are less of them and people will buy new cars again...

They just have to get through the slow times.

Let's hope that pans out. As long as the Camaro doesn't have any persistent quality issues, the new SRX is received well, and the Cruze is a hit, there isn't any reason GM can't "get back on its feet", so to speak.

Seems here in California they make it harder and harder to own a car anymore, especially an older one. I wonder how many they confiscate every year and scrap. With all the laws here its a pain in the ***.

While GM and Chrysler are struggling with bankruptcy, Ford is making its move to increase production and take away market share.

Even though Ford is making a move it may not be the best move as they are focusing on trucks and SUVs and with gas prices going up, they could be making a move in the wrong direction.

...exactly where did this number come from? In the past year we saw scrap metal prices sky rocket and saw junkyards crush their "older stockpiles" in record numbers. The high prices also prompted a lot of people to haul in "that old clunker behind the barn."

I know this because several of my once favorite junkyards crushed almost ALL of their classic inventories within the past year, when I inquired as to why they all responded with something like "the price of steel is crazy high right now." I even went to one place that just a year ago had an inventory of about 30 2nd gen S-10's, when I went back to see if I could pick up a few interior pieces, even the "newer" S-10's were all gone except for a couple.

Just something to think about

Perhaps this net 3 million vehicle decline is just getting the overall number of cars back to where it should be, i.e. a bursting of the bubble of excess car ownership. It may not represent pending demand.

Dont worry, the rest of the US will feel your pain soon enough, 12 or 16 (IIRC) states are set to adopt Cali emmissions standards and those states represent about 75% of the new cars sold in the US.
