No Crank - What have I done
The car is a 1995 firebird formula 5.7 automatic. 2 days ago it started fine. Changed out the a/c compressor. During the change out the battery was disconnected and I removed the alternator bolts and the large red wire from the alternator to get the wires routed to the compressor. Red wire was attached at the wrong angle. Battery is fully charged and all lights come on on the dash normally. Just nothing happens with the key in the start position. What have I done and what am I looking for?
If there's a problem with the battery wires, you will often get enough current to turn the lights and radio on, but possibly not enough to crank the starter, or to active the interlock that only allows you to shift it out of park if your foot is on the brake.
I found the problem even though I did not think this was it. Friday when I vacuumed out the car I saw something chrome sticking out from under the bottom side of the console. Pulled it out and it was a switch with two wires connected to it. Pulled on it gently and a lot of wire came out with two stripped ends. Today tore into the console to check the neutral safety switch. It checked out OK. Next decided to find the theft prevention relay. Removed the glove box and guess what? No relay. The wires and switch were to bypass the whole theft prevention setup. Amazing what prior owners do.
