Roxy and I just got done installing the powersteering pump on her LT1 Caprice.. I know it's not an fbody but it should basically be the same idea. Everything is hooked up, no immediate leaks to be found. We followed the steps for bleeding that Shoebox has on his site. Basically just jack up the front wheels of the ground, turn the wheel full lock to the left, check fluid and add if necessary. Done. Then turn wheel lock to lock a few times and watch for bubbles, and check level. Done.

After starting the car up everything seemed good, no leaks, no whine, steering worked ok with the car back on the ground. Then after idling for a few more minutes, the pump started whining again. The fluid in the reservoir looks frothy from all the bubbles, but the level is good.

Any ideas??

No big deal. You just had some air in the line. Just let it cool down and then check the fluid, add more if needed. Don't worry, you can't hurt the pump from not bleeding the system right unless you run it for a long time with air in the system. Eventually all the air will get out.

Are you sure it couldn't be something like air getting sucked into the line anywhere?

The entire system is under pressure. Nothing is getting sucked "in". Any leak is gonna force fluid out.

I just did my PS pump a couple weeks ago. It whined for like 2 days while it was forcing all the air out of the system. Now it's totally quiet.
