2000 Z28 Tire Clearance

Can anyone point me to a reference on tire clearance specs.

I have a 2000 and the stock tires are 235/55/16. I need to replace the tires and am considering the SS size of 275/40/17.

However, when I calculate the actual height of the tire/wheel combo, my stock tire/wheel is actually taller than the SS combo and it doesn't really fill up the wheel well.

I'm not really looking for wider than 275, just want to know if anyone can tell me the actual maximum height that can fit without modification and without interference.

Thanks

A lot of people start with the stock 245/50-16's, and move to the 275/40-17's with the identical outside diameter (25.65"). If you were trying to match your 235/55-16's (26.18"), you might want to consider looking into a 285/40-17 (25.98"). That would keep the overall diameter closer. I know the 285's will fit fine in the back.... and I am sure I have seen people with 285's in the front, but check around.

Going to a larger diameter tire isn't the way to fill up the wheel openings.... a larger diameter tire raises your car off the ground, and has the same effect as lowering your numerical rear axle ratio. If you don't like the big gaps around the tires, consider lowering the body a little...... that goes a long way to making the appearance better.
