Oil 5w - 50

By mistake I bought 5W-50 oil as Quaker State Q was on sale.

I thought I read 5W-30 and this was about 2 months ago so I cannot bring it back or I would and exchage it.

Is this oil OK for my LT1??

Its a little thick for Canadian weather. I dont know how cold it gets up there this time of year, but if you wait for summer or until it warms up a bit, you should be ok. I'v been running Mobil 1 0w-40 yearlong for a while now with no problems.

5w-50 is the stock weight oil for the Ford GT. I have been running Mobil 1 15w-50 in my '95 Z28 during the summer months will no ill effects. I think you will be fine once the weather warms up a little.

I wonder if you could mix it 50/50 with 5w-20 to make it 5w-35.

Interesting reading if you haven't seen it: http://63.240.161.99/motoroil/

You can mix the oil grades but the resulting grade could be anything.

The reason for recommended oil viscosity has to do with bearing clearance. Heavy oil does not flow easily through close tolerances; that is why engine builders increase bearing clearance by as much as 30% and then use heavier oil to protect the rotating parts. These engines are not designed to last 200,000 miles and a loose motor properly protected with lubrication will encounter less friction, produce less heat and spin up higher and more freely. Our relatively tight engines running heavy oil become more apt to spin bearings under high rpm and load if the oil cannot travel fast enough across the bearing surfaces - which is the case with high viscosity oil through .0015- to .0018 factory clearance.
