3.42 or3.73 ???

I would like to change the rear gears in my Z and am considering 3.42's or 3.73's. Your thoughts, opinions, and advise would be greatly appreciated. If possible let me also know your performance experience. I have the stock 3.23's with an automatic.

3.73:1 with an automatic isn't bad. My Monte came factory with that but it did have a slightly deeper overdrive. It'll sure wake the car up though.

Re: 3.42 or3.73 ???

On my 94 Z28, my first upgrade was to 3.73s. They were indeed fun as hell, but the streetability was pretty low. With gas prices the way they are today, ew.

I later dropped down to a 3.42 and was VERY happy. Perfect middle ground. I then added a 3200 Vigilante stall and WOOOO. The torque was just sick. I was cutting 2.0 60 foots at the track on STREET tires.

I highly recommend a combo of 3000-3200 stall with 3.42s. Worked great with my setup. I also had a nitrous kit, which I never go to put on, but it would have made for the perfect powerband on that setup.

Re: 3.42 or3.73 ???

My '94 is in the process of getting 3.73's put on as we speak......everyone I've talked to about it has told me that 3.73's were the best way to go for me, especially since I'm starting out with stock 2.73's.

I've been researching and asking around about this for a few months leading up to now, and the only bad thing people were telling me is the whole gas mileage thing.....otherwise, I have been told that 3.73's would be sick for my car. I, too, was initially going to go with 3.42's.

If you drive like a maniac and you abuse it, that may happen.

I've never heard anyone breaking it that easily with 3.73's. If you're hard on anything it'll break.

Then it must've been ridden hard before you had it.....from what I know and what I've heard, brake torqueing for only 4 seconds ONE TIME won't break your rear end.....

Either that, or you made a habit of brake torqueing and burning out.....

no brake torqueing......maybe a few hard launches but no burnouts or unnecessary wear and tear....

Actually that is only true for LT1 A4 cars. LS1's even with 2.73's had 1st gear selection. I know, because I have one. GU2 code (2.73's), and mine still has 1st gear.

Correct, except for the '93 M6 which had either 2.73 or 3.23 depending on the trans, M28 or M29
