Z284ever 03-07-2006, 08:58 PM ...being the Camaro.
Essentially a right hand drive Camaro called Camaro. Or would it need to be called something else. Monaro? Torana?
Andrew Rhines 03-07-2006, 09:40 PM That would be very, very interesting to see....
I honestly do not think it will be called Camaro....More than likely Monaro or Torana, I just cant see a "Holden Camaro"
I wonder how this one will play out..
HAZ-Matt 03-07-2006, 10:55 PM Chevy Camaro or Holden Camaro? :)
Josh452 03-07-2006, 10:56 PM The Spy Shots I ran in '05...basically was the Torana. Just bigger.
SSbaby 03-07-2006, 11:06 PM I honestly wouldn't care. To me, Holden is essentially an offshore division of GM and most buyers realize that. Why do I buy Holden? Basically for the GM powertrains and RWD drivetrains and the value factor. If GM are able to offer me the same in a similarly desirable and affordable package, then I'm in. :D
Camaro will be quite a car if it's built true to it's concept. If it sells for a bargain price, I don't think you'd have too many complaints from people down here.
Btw, Camaro must wear the Chev badge!
My 2c.
dream '94 Z28 03-07-2006, 11:12 PM Monaro....Camaro...
Camaro...Monaro...
It's all just badge engineering isn't it?

I don't care if its called Camaro I do care if it doesnt have the lion badge. I don't see the point of bringing a Chevy badge out to Australia.

especially for just one car. It would have to be a Holden Camaro to make any business sense.
SSbaby 03-08-2006, 07:28 AM I'm not headstrong about it but one could also argue why have Camaro when the Holden badge quite clearly suits Monaro better? :D Camaro is definitely about Chevy in much the same way as Corvette. The other alternative is to wait for (Pontiac) GTO and give it a Holden badge.
Sibling rivalry at its best!
Chris 96 WS6 03-08-2006, 09:26 AM Call it "Nomaro" LOL
graham 03-08-2006, 10:42 AM Call it "Nomaro" LOL
Isn't that the current program? lol :p
guionM 03-08-2006, 10:54 AM You know...
....if GM sent the Camaro to Australia for additional design work, in theory Holden could modify things that would incorperate elements of their coupe design...
....why else would Holden be involved in Camaro design work?....
......this is only a theory. ;)
Z28Wilson 03-08-2006, 01:43 PM There's no such thing as a "Holden Camaro". Hell, you wouldn't export the Corvette and call it "Holden Corvette", would you? :death:
V8 Slayer 03-08-2006, 02:07 PM Do what Saudi Arabia did with the GTO, Call it a Chevy Lumina SS :D

There is a Holden GTO (HSV GTO), Honden Caprice, Holden Captiva (Chevy Captiva sold in Europe). I'm ok with a Holden Camaro. It isn't like people in the states will ever see it. Other than the grill (which could easly end up with SS or Z28 badge) the Camaro doesn't really have many Chevy badges on it.
rlchv70 03-08-2006, 03:24 PM They could just do a reverse GTO:
Take the Camaro, add a new grill, hood, taillights, bumpers, etc. and call it a Monaro.

Because the car doesn't look like a Monaro...it looks like a Camaro. Australians don't know what the hell a Camaro is...to 99% of the people it will be a new car name. I don't see any point then not calling it a Holden, as the Camaro heritage is lost on us. :)

I believe there is a subtle hint here which answers your first statement nicely... ;)

People are aware of the Camaro nameplate just as they are Mustang... as they are Corvette. We have heaps of Chevy vehicles here, albeit privately imported. There's also lots of Mustangs... also privately imported. The issue of the buying public not relating to the Chevy badge is a moot point, IMO. What buyers will get is something "exclusive" downunder and that's gotta count for something.

What should a Monaro look like?
AnthonyHSV 03-08-2006, 07:46 PM What should a Monaro look like?
Its always been a 2-door version of the standard 4-door car be it the Kingswood or now the Commodore. Not knocking the Camaro I like the car...just don't think it fits the Monaro.

People know the Mustang and Corvette, but Camaro is not really known in Australia. I didn't know what one was untill I stumbled upon this website in 2002.

Chevrolet is a more famous name outside of Australia. Holden even rebadges their Commodore line for sale in the middle east.
But if Chevrolet sold a Camaro in Australia, it's probally very safe to say it would be sold through Holden dealers. Knowing that GM would probally want to expand the Camaro name, it's probally equally safe to say the car would be still called Camaro.
Because of circumstances, I suspect Holden will have their own car made here with the Camaro with a different appearence (more likely similar to the Pontiac "coupe").
rlchv70 03-08-2006, 09:40 PM Here's some pictures of older Monaros:

They're not too far off of the new Camaro...

Holden will be selling Cadillacs shortly. What then? I can't imagine the cars being rebadged Holden CTS, STS etc... the alpahbet style names here would be meaningless... and a marketing nightmare.

The Channel 9 Chev Camaro that set pole at Bathurst in 1980 doesn't register with you?... it flipped at the top of the mountain. Kevin Bartlett loved it but CAMs decided to restrict its menace!

Bob Jane also raced Camaro with great success in the 60s and 70s against the Moffat/Gheoghan Mustangs.
Most of the above was before my time, but I have taken a keen interest in hardtop racing... and the Camaro name is very much part of Australia's motorsport history.
