2009 saturn ion = opel astra diesel hybrid?

is this true?

i wonder if it'll be available in diesel? is the diesel hybrid a hybrid in a traditional sense?

after a quick google, yes indeed it is in a traditional sense.

GM claims damn near 60mpg ...

That is the plan, at least right now. The car wouldn't be a Delta either. It would be based on an evolution of the current Astra's updated T-body. BTW the T-body has IRS and the next one will likely have AWD capability.

Why would I want a Diesel hybrid that only gets 60mpg? A regular diesel jetta got like 45-50...

Only IF you can keep it running, heh...

Still 10-15mpg more.

60mpg+ would be impressive. That'd wake some people up!

no wonder Toyota is having their "I want my MPG" commercials, they are encouraging consumers to seek other brands where MPG is accually correct
