Found a new water leak.

Well, the rainy season has arrived and now it's time to strip down the camaro again. A new leak has appeared and the cars smelling again.

Last year, it was the little grommet in the engine bay under the computer. It wasn't in correctly and was allowing water into the front passenger area. Fixed that. Then, it was the grommet under the rear passenger seat. I had fed the cutout wire through there and didn't seal it correctly. That was my fault.

This year, it's the hatch area. Turns out when I park my car on a downhill and it rains the water will pool up in the front, near where the roof "hoop" meets the fender. There's no trough up there for it to drain through and the fender line is a good couple of inches above the weatherstripping. It will rise up until it leaks through the weatherstripping. Not the part that seals to the hatch, but where it's actually glued to the body. I pulled it back a little and put some rtv sealant there, hoping to seal it for good. There was little to no glue there before. It was dropping onto the area near the passenger seatbelt reciever and pooling up in the rear seat buckets. It is doing it on both sides.

Now, keep in mind that the hatch is closing correctly and the little rubber bumbers in the hatch are fully turned in, giving it the best seal. It is leaking despite this.

This problem wouldn't have happened it it was parked facing uphill, but then again, you're not supposed to be worrying about things like this on a 4 year old car.

Just posting this for someone that has my problem and does a search.

Re: Found a new water leak.

I had a probelm faily similar like your's. what it came to be was the spoiler wasn't sealed against the hatch properly allow water to seep between the hatch and spoiler and into the hold that they wires go to that feed the 3rd break light. I just took the spoiler off cleaned up both surfaces and put some slicone on around that hold and the holes where the studs that hold the spoiler on to the hatch. Took me forever and a day to figure it out. Runined my box for my subs, the cargo area under the hatch was basicly a pool with mold around the edge, and the floor board behind the driver seat was also a pool. Don't ask me how water got from the spoiler up the body and into my floor board but it did. Havn't had any probemls as of yet and that was like 6 months ago.

Re: Found a new water leak.

I appreciate both of your posts since I have the same problem with my 2000 SS. All of a sudden, I began to get water in the trunk well and in the front passenger footwell when it rains. (It doesn't leak when I just wash the car.) I have been unable to find where in the hell the water is coming from, but your 2 post provide some clues. A couple of questions,if you don't mind: Crasher88, how do you go about taking off the spoiler? I don't see any screws just lifting the spoiler. And have either of you had any further leaks since your fixes? Very much appreciate your thoughts and help.

Re: Found a new water leak.

you have to take the platic inteior peice thats on the under side of the hatch back. its just held in by push pins so just feel around till you find one and apply gentle pressure away from the hatch and it should pull out do that for all of them and that pannel should come out and then you should see 4 nuts holding the spoiler on to the hatchback with some wires running though a seperate hole. And so far no more leaks except air leaks at high way speeds but I can live with those. The only problem is I didn't fix it in time and ruined my back seat its starting to mildew and needs to be refoamed and apolstered(sp?) not really a big deal since I really want to delete the rear seat completely not I have a good excuse to.
