Best Drag Racing Posi???
Best Drag Racing Posi???
The posi is starting to go out, so I will be replacing it before I make any trips to the track this year. I am looking at the Eaton or Auburn Pro Series, but would like to know what would you drag racers recommend?
Thanks
Thanks

Seriously though, I agree.

I make it a habit not to use parts I can't pronounce drunk.
Seriously though, the Torsen is great for autocrossing or ice, snow, mud off-roading type stuff. Its not really a drag racing setup. Its more refined, which is why SLP probably services them. In other words its main function is not to lock the axles together, rather provide smooth torque to both axles with independant wheel speeds. Ya dig?

Re: Best Drag Racing Posi???
A spool would require C-clip eliminators. The stock axles are way to small to be subjected to the abuse of a spool. A spool just isn't a good option for a multiuse car. The length of the stock axle just magnifies the problem. Spools are good for narrowed rear ends with short, stiff, yet compliant springy axles.

I've got 7 years on my Pro-Auburn running 11's with no problems. Having said that I'm sure it will single track tomorrow. It came with the car and it still works so I didn't replace it. I do like the Eaton better...with the 800 lb spring kit....

Re: Best Drag Racing Posi???
Is there an easy way to tell if an eaton posi has the 400# or 800# springs?
Is there a horsepower level that the 400#ers are ok for?
And where can you buy a set of the 800#ers?

From what I understand, without calling Eaton, is that the 10 and 12 bolt Eatons come with the 400s standard. A heavy duty upgrade with the 12 bolt is the 800s. A while back Moroso made a Brute Strength posi which I think was the Eaton with 800s in it and a few more frictions, but I'm not sure. You can get the springs from Eaton, Randy's Ring and Pinion, Year One, etc. I don't remember if there is a color difference, or an easy way to tell.
400s are good for most applications, but if you are going to use a sticky tire/slick I would go with the 800s. Thinking about it further I don't know that I would use the 800s in the 10 bolt just because it would add stress to the small axles and gears. I would definitely go with 800s in a 12 bolt. I used them on my low 12 second Chevelle with a Moser 12 bolt and they worked great, almost like a spool for the first 100 miles..

Re: Best Drag Racing Posi???
I think it would be a good idea to upgrade. I've never installed the springs myself I just ordered the posi with them already installed. I'm sure someone else will chime in on how to do it. I wouldn't think it would be too hard, just a little time consuming.

I never took the Eaton apart, but from looking at it I don't think it would be too bad. However, since you don't have one yet why not just order it with the 800# springs?
