350pride 04-20-2005, 11:48 PM I have got a 94z and my friend had a 89 turbo supra that was built to hold about 500 rwhp, but we decided to hit a tree before he had a chance to turn up the boast. So now we have this turbo just laying around, and I was like "I wonder if...." and now I need the great wisdom of camaroz to help me. I believe the turbo is a ct36 (maybe). so will it work or Im i being stupid.
Dave19yz28 04-21-2005, 12:29 AM its a CT26, not 36 (assuming its stock)...any turbo would potentially work on your car, just all the plumbing that goes into it is a bitch...relatively speaking the CT26 is one of the bigger turbos to come on a stock car...but thats also a 3.0 liter, i believe they max out around 15 psi (can go higher but not as much power is made). There are bigger turbos that can bolt onto the flange though.
350pride 04-21-2005, 01:34 AM So where could i get the "plumbing" for it and what is life expectancy for a turbo LT1. Is it the same as a supercharged one; eventhough turbos make more power with less boast. So maybe i could run a really low boast and be ok. I think im just doing wishful thinking. any suggestions. what would you do?
Dave19yz28 04-21-2005, 01:48 AM turbos dont necessarily make more power with less boost, depends what turbo and what supercharger you are talking about...
the plumbing would have to be done by you, or you can check out the STS turbo kit, or the pro turbo kit. Just make sure you get the right flange for the CT 26 to weld on in place of the flange that comes with the kit (i'm sure the CT26 will not fit on the provided flange). Anyway you slice it it's gonna be an expensive project.
As for expectancy, depends on how much boost you run. You'll also need to upgrade you're fuel system with the turbo. In my opinion, it's not a good diea to run any type of FI on a stock bottom end, but you know what they say about opinions....
If you had the time and the money, CT26's are a cheap turbo (relatively speaking) it would be interesitng to do a twin setup...$$$
Edit: just reread your post, the CT26 maxes out at about 300 Hp on the 7MGTE, maybe it isnt the CT26?? What is done to his car to make it ready to handle 500 HP?
350pride 04-21-2005, 03:38 PM In response to the 500 rwhp I stand corrected. I asked him and he said that he had the motor completely rebuilt and the head gaskets replaced with metal ones so that it could hold more boast. he says that he was going to upgrade the turbo charger but he cant remember how much the block would have held or the turbo would have made. So as for the 500rwhp i guess i imagined it. Sorry about the post but I guess I was wrong.
Dave19yz28 04-21-2005, 05:30 PM no no, nothing like that, i wasn't flaming. With a metal gasket, The 7M could hold a LOT of power, just not with the CT26. With a bigger turbo anything is possible though...
engineermike 04-21-2005, 06:16 PM Many people find a turbo sitting around and think "now that I got the big part, it shouldn't be too hard to install it." That couldn't be further from the truth. Stock T-type T3's, CT26's, etc OEM turbos are common and very cheap. I happen to have a CT26 off an MR2 in my shop. It was free.
The biggest part of a turbo kit is the plumbing. Check out the PTK prices. The turbo is the cheap part, and the high-quality ones are $1400+.
BTW, that CT-26 looks tiny compared to my T-76.
Mike
Dave19yz28 04-21-2005, 11:32 PM oh no doubt there are much bigger turbos than the CT26...i just meant for stock cars, the CT26 is one of the bigger you will find.
neil350 04-24-2005, 05:27 PM My friend just built a turbo 3.8 4th gen, the turbo is like te small part, plumbing and then all the problems you run in to fabbing up your own kit is sick
SocalZ28 04-25-2005, 01:13 AM lol, wow reading all of that was very comical. I own a 88 toyota supra turbo in addition to my camaro. The ct-26 in its stock form can make effecient boost all the way up to 18-19psi. after that it loose's effeciency and is just being wasteful. you can easily upgrade the ct-26 to a 54-60 trim and it still appears stock, and that easily increase's horsepower numbers, here is an example of my car:
3 inch intake
3 inch turbo elbow
3 inch downpipe
3 inch hi flow cat
3 inch exhuast
550cc injectors
Lexus AFM from a sc430
GreddyTrust Front Mount Intercooler
Whalbro 225 lb/hr fuel pump
Greddy profec b spec II boost controller
apexi S-AFC II
HKS 1.2MM metal head gasket
ARP head studs
Greddy type s Blow Off Valve
i boost 10 psi out of the stock turbo
and guess how much horsepower im making to the rear wheels there? 338 and 370 ft/lbs of torque. out a 3.0 straight six. stock it made 232 and 250 ft/lbs out of 5 psi of boost.
so now if i increased my boost on that setup to 18 psi, dont you think id be making a lot more horsepower?
Turbo'ing a car that isnt already turbocharged is incredibly difficult, you have to take into effect is there enough room for the custom exhuast manifold's and flange's neccessary for the turbo's, is there enough room for the downpipe's and the wastegates, how am i going to intercool it, the custom intercooler piping, the electronics involved, the fine tuning, you have to run custom o2 sensors, remap you ECU for fuel and air, upgrade your ignition system and advance timing, you need to rebuild the top end and use metal head gaskets because non metal head gaskets will flex out from the incredible amount of air being shoved through the heads. and thats just the parts, dont forget about labor, dyno tuning, breakin the car in etc. If you really wanna build it right, you need to completley rebuild the engine to run about 8.5 compression, high compression and boost = no bueno for the bottom end. its an easy way to put a rod through the block.
There is so much more involved in turbocharging a car, for a camaro, just go supercharge it. the 8-10 psi out of the supercharge is all your really looking for anyways. If you have very little to no previous knowledge about the mechanics of turbo's, your in for a very long headache and about to loose lots of money.
Dave19yz28 04-25-2005, 07:26 PM thats impressive, i was merely telling you what my good friend told me. he has owned 3 supras, and with intake, full 3 inch dp, and 3 inch exhaust, i pulled a car on him on the highway WITHOUT headers. Meanwhile, his motor was boosting to 13 lbs on a shimmed wastegate, on one run he actually hit fuel cut.
He has since moved on to a 1 J swap with an HKS 3037 single, and he wipes the floor with me regularly.
