gauge lighting
gauge lighting
can any gauge be changed with a LED? For instance, a sport-comp autometer gauge be changed to blue or red #'s instead of plain white? I ask this ? because i AM NOT paying $225+ for a cobalt tach!

Re: gauge lighting
Most of the AutoMeter gauges like the Sport-Comp series are lighted from a gap at the sides, from the bulb in the back of the gauge. AutoMeter sells little colored condoms to put on the bulbs to change the color of the lighting... red, blue, yellow and green are available. I have the red covers, and the gauges match the Firebird stock red panel lighting.

Re: gauge lighting
I tried using an LED instead of a bulb, and it never got past the testing stage. Like Fred said, the gauge face (on ultra-lite gauges anyway) lights up from the sides, and an LED is too directional to do a good job of it. It lights up, sure, but not well enough to read. I even tried a high intesity one's, and still no dice. The little bulb covers end up working the best. Not sure what colors they come in though.. If your looking for that cobalt look, your gonna have to pony up and buy some..
