Rear end leak

I was wondering what usually causes rear end leaks or is it a sign of the rear end going out. I was think probably a gasket or something or is it something worse then that.

Re: Rear end leak

I've found that the pinion seal (front of the rear where the yoke mounts to the pinion gear) is the major source of leaks.

Yeah the car im looking at has a leaking rear end and is leaking exactly wherer you stated above. I was wondering is there any way in fixing that problem and would it be pricey? BTW the rear end is on an 98 SS.
