What do you paint your rotors with to stop the damn rust~!?

yes yes I know i should go spend 700 on brakes and get the good stuff, but I cant.

I already shouldn't have bought the car :)

This saturday I plan to return my autozone rotors and take advantage of the 2 year warren. on them- I bought them in novemember and they are already bent (I was really trying to not be bad w/ them, but someone on the highway slammed their brakes on infront of me in rush hour traffic and they were toast)....


So here's the question, every time i get these sorta cheap (cuz 300 isnt cheap for me, but is for most of you) rotors the areas where the pads dont touch rust sooooo bad and look so ugly.

My questions are:

1How do you stop it?

I assume it is paint or something... if so


2. What exactly should i get from autozone or NAPA (Paint name/brand?)


if it's not paint


3. what is it?





4.... How much abuse can these rotors take? this is the third set i have put on in 4 years of ownage. should i just use the warrentee and swap em out when i rotate my tires each time?

Items needed:

Tape (duct, painters)
Brake Cleaner
High temp paint primer
High temp paint (black, gray, charcoal etc)
High temp clearcoat
Newspaper

-Clean the rotors throughly with brake cleaner
-Tape up the pad contact area (error on too little, the pad will take off any overage)
-Put rotors on newspaper to save your garage/drive/yard
-Follow the high temp primer instructions on the can and paint the center
-Follow the high temp paint instructions on the can and paint the center
-Follow the high temp clearcoat instructions on the can

To do the calipers, same thing, though you'll want to take a sander to them to smooth them out a bit and get rid of the casting marks. I forgot to add, you should probably add some high temp clear coat.

I didn't want mine to stand out, so I used a metallic gray color. Nothing worth having a picture of. Didn't think the brakes were worth highlighting. I wanted the wheel to stand out, not the brake behind it.

get em sandblasted and powdercoated, will solve ur problem

I just finished my C5 Brake conversion last night, and was wondering about the same thing.

Basically, I have already bought the black high temp paint, but I was thinking that instead I would just make sure the rotors don't have any rust on them and then just hit them with high temp clearcoat. That will keep the entire rotor looking nice and silver. Of coarse I wouldn't clearcoat the area that the pad touches. Do you guys think that any rust would develop under the clearcoat?

I know Auto zone and Advanced auto parts in my area both sell brake caliper paint kits with high temp paint. I suppore you could also use it on the rotors but you would have to super clean the new ones because they spray them with an oil when they are packed to avoid rust.

Look on Ebay for the lettering, I see it all the time.

Although the cheap rotors you bought are more prone to warping. It will take more than one hard brake application to do it. To warp any rotor you have to heat it up quite a bit.

FWIW, I talked to the guys at Stainless Steel Brake Corporation about one of their front brake kits. They mentioned that powder coating the calipers causes them to retain heat. I plan on trying my hand at autocrossing, so I'll probably get the calipers without any extra finish.
